Subject: Join Us: A Course for Thanksgiving

Hi Friend,

How do we engage with Thanksgiving?

With the lies, the histories of genocide, the questions of land and hospitality?

With the need for harvest festivals, time with family, and foods of this land?

What does it mean to celebrate local food when so many indigenous foodways have been disrupted?

When we need times dedicated to gratitude?

You may know that for the last few Novembers, I've been very involved in changing our stories around Thanksgiving as part of repairing the First Harm of colonization. Collaborating with indigenous colleagues has been a huge gift in this process, especially my partner Kristine Hill. She and I offered what was a really cool class around Thanksgiving last year. When several students asked us to do it again this year, we said yes.

this year, we are focusing on intertwining histories of your family, of food, and of americas national history. For all of you who love thinking and talking about and engaging with food - this one is totally for you!

We would love for you to join us.

It's a short course. Starting next week. Four sessions. Very simple.

Orientated around you, your family, and, importantly, food and land.

Together, we are going to lean into the challenging histories, and think through practical and spiritual ways of telling different stories, and what it means to engage with this holiday, which carries so much emotion and weight, differently this year.

Which is, amongst other things, the 200-year anniversary of the Johnson v McIntosh Court case, which embedded the Doctrine of Discovery into U.S. property law, which continues to shape American property systems. So it's a good year to delve into some of these things. To not try to do this holiday alone.
