These days, there is a wonderful proliferation of ways to engage with ancestors. I'm always surprised at how few of them do something really basic: help people understand the complex historical context that shaped our ancestors' behaviors and choices.  And to do so in a way that engages with the massive amount of unlearning that is necessary - most people, even those who have read books like, 'A peoples history of the united states,' remain horribly disconnected from history. Can we understand our ancestors, can we connect with them, without also engaging with complex histories, and the theologies, spiritualities, economies, and ecologies that they created? 

Part of healing ourselves is engaging in the act of ReMembering. It's somatic. And spiritual. And intellectual. And practical. Because we are human. We are all of these aspects.  

Those who do think about ReMembering too often focus on only the "cool stuff."  We come from stars and are made of the stuff that creates galaxies and corn and beans alike. We are sacred. Our bodies are holy. Our vibrations influence the vibrations of the great Singer of Songs.  All of which is true, powerful, and beautiful. 

But without theodicy, without an appreciation of the ugly, the bloody, the dismembered histories and the painful historical dynamics, then the integration of cultures, knowledge, and diverse perspective becomes very, very difficult.
