Service, Judgment, and Perspective.
This month, we remember a life dedicated to service, reaffirm the need for human intelligence in the world of AI, and recognize how humility and good humor can enrich our work and support our community.
A Tribute to Dan Reuter: Volunteer, Advocate, and Friend
We were saddened to learn of the passing of longtime volunteer Dan Reuter, whose life was marked by extraordinary service, compassion, and commitment to justice. A dedicated volunteer with River Valley Pro Bono and one of Indiana Free Legal Answers' top contributors, Dan devoted countless hours to helping those in need.
Read Dan's obituary and our full tribute to learn more about his extraordinary life and legacy. We also invite attorneys to honor Dan's memory by answering a question (or three) on Indiana Free Legal Answers and continuing the work he cared so deeply about.
The Indiana Court of Appeals recently took the opportunity in Holstein v. Holstein, 25A-DC-2767 (Ind. Ct. App. June 16, 2026)to address the use of AI when preparing legal pleadings, and when sanctions are appropriate for improper inclusion of AI-hallucinated cases in an appellate brief.
Key takeaways include:
AI is a tool, not a decision-maker.
Never assume accuracy.
Ethical duties cannot be delegated to AI.
If you miss something, fix it immediately.
In short, AI may be a powerful tool, but the misuse of AI can be costly. For a longer analysis, please see IBPN's post.
