This isn't a story about preparation. He had it. The interview wasn't unfair.. they never are, really. This is a story about load.
International candidates walk into every interview carrying four things at once:
The visa clock. The debt. The family back home. The actual question being asked.
The first three always crowd out the fourth. A citizen candidate carrying only the fourth is going to sound sharper in the room — not because they're better, because they have less to hold.
The interviewer can't see the load. They only see the answer. Or the absence of one. When there's an absence, they fill it with the cheapest explanation — "this person doesn't quite know their stuff" — and the call gets short.
Two specific places this load shows up loudest.
First, the H1B question. Most candidates ask "Will you sponsor my H1B?" six minutes into a 45-minute call and watch the recruiter shut down. Better version: "If I crush it over the next year and prove I'm worth keeping, would H1B sponsorship be on the table down the road?" Same ask. Different planet. You sound confident, long-term, and here for the company — not the paperwork.
Second, the explanation. Fear of seeming dumb makes international candidates over-explain. A senior engineer last week answered "what does your current company do?" with three minutes about Kafka, Flink, and event-driven microservices. The company sells car insurance. He could have said "we sell car insurance, my team makes claims process faster." 8 seconds instead of 3 minutes. Same answer. The interviewer wants the 12-year-old's version. If you can't simplify it, they assume you don't get it. And once they assume that, the H1B question — already loaded — kills the call.
Btw both fixes are the same fix.. confidence plus simplicity. Calm plus brevity. Practice until the answer comes out clean even when the inside is loud.
The mental load is real. The chance is also real. They don't always show up at the same time.
When the chance comes — don't lose it because the inside was too loud to hear yourself, or because you tried too hard to sound smart.
