Michaelmas: Kindling courage in the heart

Dear friends,

As Michaelmas approaches, we send warm greetings to our Wise Cosmos community. We are glad to connect with a thought for this season.

While preparing transcripts of Brian Gray's Exploring Anthroposophy lectures, we were drawn to a passage about Archangel Michael and the dragon. It speaks to a question that can feel very close to daily life: As the dragon coils through our animality, how and where do we find the capacity for strength to overcome the powers that try to drag us away from truth, from care for one another, and from the human beings we aspire to become?

In the third lecture, Brian brings our attention to the struggle within our own souls and to the spiritual help we can freely turn towards. He draws upon this passage from Rudolf Steiner:

"So the content of the human Gemüt can be this: The power of the Dragon is working within me, trying to drag me down. I do not see it — I feel it as something that would drag me down below myself. But in the spirit I see the luminous Angel whose cosmic task has always been the vanquishing of the Dragon. I concentrate my Gemüt upon this glowing figure, I let its light stream into my Gemüt, and thus my illumined and warmed Gemüt will bear within it the strength of Michael. And out of a free resolution I shall be able, through my alliance with Michael, to conquer the Dragon's might in my own lower nature."

Rudolf Steiner, Michaelmas and the Soul-Forces of Man - Lecture 1. Presented in Vienna on September 27, 1923. GA 223.

Gemüt is a rich German word that resists single-word translation. It brings together heart, mind, soul, temperament, and disposition - the inner tone or coloring through which a person meets the world.  For Steiner, Gemüt is feeling-life when it becomes a stable, formative organ rather than a passing reaction. It is not feeling as event, but feeling as substance – something that can be filled, illumined, warmed, concentrated, given content, and streamed.

In his Exploring Anthroposophy course, Brian invites us to understand Gemüt through the meeting of loving warmth, thought, and imagination that welcomes and cultivates the presence of Michael.

There is something quietly encouraging in this picture. When we recognise and acknowledge the dragon nature within us, we can then draw upon the light and strength of Michael to subdue its power, gradually transforming our thoughts, feelings, and deeds. The words "out of a free resolution" emphasize personal responsibility and the possibility of transformation through conscious, freely chosen, inner resolve and decision.

It may begin with a small deed: pausing before reacting, speaking honestly when it is difficult, or meeting another person with renewed care. Each offers an opportunity to bring our inner work into the life we share.

Perhaps we might carry a question into the Michaelmas season: When and where, in the circumstances of my own life, can I look more keenly for the luminous Angel whose cosmic task has always been to vanquish the Dragon?

Living in Love in the Service of Archangel/Archai Michael: Inspiring Humanity's Path Forward Into

Freedom

A free video presentation by Brian Gray (1 hour, 21 minutes)

How can we transform self-interest into loving concern for others and the world? Drawing upon Rudolf Steiner's insights, Brian explores humanity's movement from the forces of aggression towards the healing forces of love, and Michael's service in illuminating this path. The verse “Victorious Spirit!” offers a focus for this work in our own lives.

Exploring Anthroposophy: Awakening to Our Spiritual Mission

Eight recorded sessions with Brian Gray, with eurythmy contributions from Alice Stamm (16 hours, 17 minutes)

The Rudolf Steiner quote used near the top of this newsletter comes from the third lecture in this series. Following a path from Michaelmas towards Christmas and the Holy Nights, these sessions offer sustained exploration of our becoming as beings of freedom and love. For those with some grounding in anthroposophy, they can become a companion to individual study or shared inquiry.
