Subject: Wilbur Hot Springs March 2024 Newsletter

Community Blossoms
It's no doubt that Wilbur has a knack for attracting some astounding and talented people. Nearly everyday, a talented musician picks up an instrument and captures the room, many times drawing a small crowd. This winter has been a time to tune in and take note of the talent already blessing our walls. As we move into spring, we are excited to continue highlighting community members in new and meaningful ways.

This past month, we hosted a Winter Wellness and a Medicinal Chocolate workshop, led by long time Wilbur guests Dr. Christopher Hobbs and Anya Tyutyunik and Erica Moore respectively. Both events were highly successful in attracting the participation of all the guests, allowing for learning and sharing from all sides, creating truly beautiful spaces. With plenty of Music in-between, February was a successful month filled with gathering and growth.

Throughout the month of March, while the weather is still chilly, you can expect to hear musical performances in the community room each weekend. As the winter recedes and the warmer days arrive in April, we plan to bring back yoga and movement sessions on the yoga deck. Be sure to take a look at our Special Events Calendar so you don't miss out on your favorite program.

Restoring the Watershed
In February, 2023, we engaged with Kevin Swift of Swift Water Design to install a number of Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) in two of the tributary streams that feed Sulphur Creek. The main purpose of BDAs is to slow the storm water down as it flows into the Sulfur Creek, reducing sediment in the streams and, more importantly, keeping the water on the land longer. This creates marshy areas, allowing water to further saturate the ground, improving soil health, encouraging the growth of several native species of grasses and reeds, and expanding riparian habitat for all the insects, birds, amphibians, and mammals. The picture above from February 2024 shows how the dams have spread the water out onto the flat areas in lower parts of the tributary.

Our plan is to continue placing BDAs in tributaries throughout the nature preserve. If you haven’t already, join our Work-Trade List to stay updated on work projects and scheduled work dates.

This year’s winter rains have brought massive change to the landscape. The creek is swollen, the hills are green, and flowers are starting to bloom, indicating spring is just around the corner. We've started to see some pops of yellow buttercups and even a poppy blooming on the sunniest of days last week, signaling wildflower season is about to begin. If you’d like to learn more about wildflowers, flora, fauna and the general ecosystem, you’ll want to continue reading and consider joining us this spring when we host our 4th annual California Naturalist Certification Course!

California Naturalist Course
Wilbur Hot Springs is hosting its fourth annual California Naturalist Course, taught by our friends at Tuleyome. Developed by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, the program is designed to introduce its students to the wonders of California’s unique ecology and engage the public in study and stewardship of California’s natural communities. The California Naturalist programs uses science curriculum, hands-on learning, problem-solving, participatory science, and community service to instill a deep appreciation for the natural communities of the state and to inspire individuals to become stewards of their local resources. The classes will be held at Wilbur Hot Springs, beginning the evening of Sunday, April 14, 2024 through Friday, April 19, 2024. Please send your inquires about this eye-opening course to adaline@wilburhotsprings.com.

An Invitation from Dr. Richard Miller
Many of you recall that during my 48-year tenure as owner of Wilbur Hot Springs, I sent weekly newsletters announcing upcoming guests on my radio program, Mind Body Health and Politics. Every week, I host a forum to engage with critical issues that influence our lives and the world. These discussions feature prominent national authorities, scientists, and best-selling authors exploring the intricate relationship between our mental, physical, and societal well-being.
I trust you will join me once again by subscribing to the Mind Body Health & Politics newsletter. While you’re there, drop a comment with your favorite memory of Wilbur.

See you in the waters! Golden light,

Dr. Richard L. Miller
