| | Wilbur's Four-Legged Residents
|
|
During the last year or so, many have
credited their pets with helping them get through some very challenging times,
providing love and companionship when it was dearly needed. We often are asked
by guests about the dogs at Wilbur – so I’ll take this opportunity in the “dog
days” of summer to provide an introduction to our four-legged residents.
Friday is a Golden Retriever, and her
humans are Zhenya, and the Embassy Community in San
Francisco, where Wilbur’s Stewards call home. Friday loves
Wilbur and often accompanies the Embassy folks when they are staying with us.
Friday is gentle and resourceful – she often makes her way in/out on her own,
and she sometimes “speaks” when playing with toys or sticks. Addy is a Portuguese Water Dog, and her
humans are myself and my wife Azusa. Addy is typically with us at all times.
Since our office adjoins the community room, she sometimes ventures out there
to greet guests and sniff around. Addy is extremely friendly and a little
goofy. Friday and Addy have been fast friends since they first met last fall. Rags is a Standard Poodle, whose
human is Jeff, our Guest Services Manager. He’s friendly but also very playful
and bouncy. He’s well behaved and smart, but still a puppy - when he’s around
Addy he usually wants to play.
Frank the Cat, formerly a fixture in/under
the Red House, now lives with Greg, our Assistant GM, who also has another
house cat named Sponge. Our Lead Housekeeper, Sarah, also has a house cat named
Charlotte. These felines are rarely seen out and about at Wilbur these days.

| Dr. Richard Miller has five dogs,
some of whom accompany him and Jolee on their visits to Wilbur. They are Russian
Wolfhounds Sasha, Grishka and Misha, and Rhodesian Ridgebacks Franklin and Abigail.
When at Wilbur, they spend their time at Dr. Miller’s cabin in the Nature
Preserve. We hope that you can appreciate our
companions - they know to behave around guests and aren’t in the way much, but
we realize that everyone has different views on the four-legged ones. Please feel free
to greet them and do let us know if they are disrupting in any way. Greg Hagin, General Manager |
| | | Following recently updated
guidance from the CDC and CDPH, Wilbur continues to adapt to the current
public health situation and make appropriate changes to our Covid-19 protocols.
We have recently seen a steep increase in cases, with data suggesting that the
highly transmissible Delta Variant is severely affecting unvaccinated
individuals. Data also suggests that vaccinated individuals without face
coverings may be able to spread the virus to unvaccinated individuals,
even when asymptomatic. Given this new trend, Starting on Thursday, August
5, 2021, we will be requiring face coverings indoors for all individuals,
regardless of vaccination status. This will apply to common indoor areas in the
hotel and solar lodge when not eating or drinking. We hope that this will be a
temporary measure, until vaccination rates increase and indoor spaces are safer
for all staff and guests.Thank you for your continued understanding while we do our best to keep Wilbur safe for all.

| Drought Conditions Affecting Wilbur
The current drought, which
climatologists have characterized as “exceptional,” began last year and was
worsened by the lowest winter rainfall in 50 years. Wilbur relies on 2 springs,
Bear Spring and Cherry Spring, and Cherry Spring has stopped producing. We have
expected these conditions and implemented various measures to help save water.
Residents use wash basins for dishes and take brief showers, stopping the water
to lather. We all keep eyes open for any leaks that can be repaired or
prevented. We take all laundry off property to wash at the laundromat. The
showers in the bathing area have been fitted with pull chains that stop the
flow automatically (these are a work in progress). We have temporarily closed
the cold plunge tub, since it was too warm in summer and the water constantly runs
when it is open. Guests can always help by not running faucets unless
necessary, using the three basins to wash kitchen dishes without running
faucets, and not running your shower while soaping. We hope you will join us in
conserving wherever you can, and we thank you for your understanding and compassion while we
implement water saving measures this season.
Weather & Air Quality
To assist guests in assessing weather and air quality conditions at Wilbur, we have created links to this information on the Wilbur Hot Springs website. Last fall, we installed an air quality sensor which communicates with the website PurpleAir.com. The sensor is located at our Facilities Shop, next to the long term parking lot, and provides real time Air Quality Index (AQI) data. The weather forecast comes from the National Weather Service weather station which is located very close to our property, just off the Meadow Overlook Trail. The NWS forecast is quite detailed and accurate, although the display may take a minute to get used to. We hope this information is helpful to you when planning or preparing for your next visit. Closedown 2021
Wilbur will be closed for annual "Closedown" the week of August 15th. We still have shifts available for kitchen assistance, so if you are able to join in the fun, please send e-mail to gregh@Wilburhotsprings.com. |
