The Wishing Tree
Wilbur is best known for her medicinal, healing waters and the slower, natural pace which allows visitors to reflect and enjoy the restorative peace and quiet.

One of Wilbur’s many traditions is the Wishing Tree. Guests write heartfelt (and some quite humorous) wishes for themselves and others on colorful cards and hang them on the wishing tree. On New Year’s Eve, a bonfire is lit near the creek, and hundreds of paper wishes are released into the fire. This year, with Wilbur closed in compliance with the Regional Stay Home Order, there were no guests to participate in this annual ritual.

Stewards and Resident Staff gathered the wishes, built a small bonfire, and upheld the annual ritual of releasing these beautiful thoughts, wishes and prayers into the fire for transformation. It was touching to be a part of this ritual, and it felt important to ensure it continued despite this year of so many disruptions.

Our guests make Wilbur truly special - you who visit, many who return over the years to layer your thoughts, prayers and wishes into the natural tapestry here. The energy of the land and water is woven with your energy, the moments shared, meals cooked, love found and sparks re-ignited. As we bring in the New Year, Wilbur echoes with your laughter, tears, music and silence. Our wish this year is that you may all safely return in the coming weeks and months, to bathe in the water, walk on the land, and help to keep our traditions and our sanctuary vital and thriving for generations to come.
Outdoor Recreation and Day Use Opening January 5
As many of you know, Wilbur has been closed and unable to offer overnight accommodations at this point in the pandemic, with so many ill and hospitals overflowing throughout the state. However, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has also provided that, “to promote and protect the physical and mental well-being of people in California, Outdoor Recreation facilities may continue to operate.”

As a Health Sanctuary, Wilbur is committed to safely re-open for Day Use Only during the Stay Home Order, in compliance with the guidance issued by the CDPH. Guidelines for Outdoor Recreational Facilities do not allow for indoor use of facilities, nor the sale or provision of food or beverage for consumption. Accordingly, no overnight accommodations are permitted.

We invite guests to reserve a space to safely bathe in the Hot Springs and hike the Nature Preserve.

Day users during this time will need to follow important modified protocols to ensure safety of guests and staff. These are based on guidance for outdoor recreational facilities and include:
  • Advance reservations will be required - capacity will be limited to allow socially distanced, safe use of the facilities.
  • Day use is for one time period only - 10:00AM to 5:00PM. All guests must depart at 5:00PM.
  • California residents only - no out of state visitors will be permitted.
  • Social distancing of at least 6 feet is required at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times when not swimming or bathing.
  • Gathering with members of other households is not permitted.
  • The use of indoor facilities (hotel, community room, refrigerators, indoor bathrooms, etc.) is not permitted.

Because of all the modifications, Wilbur will offer a flexible, penalty-free cancellation policy up until the day of the reservation. Cancellations on the day of the reservation will be charged the full day use fee or rescheduled for a later date; there will be no partial day credits issued for inclement weather, etc. Please note that temperatures will vary - there will be no indoor facilities available, so dress accordingly in layers, bring provisions, etc.
We look forward to safely welcoming you back to Wilbur. We will closely monitor the CDPH data and keep you posted on when we might open for accommodations once again.
Changes At Wilbur
During the current shutdown, Wilbur’s Resident Staff have been working diligently to prepare the premises for your return. We hope to be able to brighten your next visit with the small changes and upgrades that have kept us busy during this challenging time. We anticipate that when the Stay Home Order is eventually lifted, we will once again need to provide meals to our visitors (to avoid the shared use of the community kitchen) and we have been developing and refining that program as well. Please be safe and sound until we can welcome you once again to Wilbur Hot Springs.
