There’s a concept in photography, art and design, called ‘negative space’. This is the blank area around the subject. Just the presence of this area of ‘nothing’ makes the image more striking and powerful. It adds to the effect, rather than taking anything away from it. The space itself becomes a crucial element in the overall picture.
Similarly, in our busy lives, the space or buffer that we create around ourselves enhances ‘the effect’. When we have room to breathe, everything about our lives works better and feels more enjoyable. Do you hear yourself telling the old story that you don’t have time?
- Who has time to exercise?
- I’ll get to the doctor when things calm down …
- Holidays? What are they?
We can get so wrapped up in the positives of productivity that it’s easy to forget the positives of negative space. We make a point of reminding our clients about this in our Fast Forward Coaching program. They rarely struggle to come up with the action items for which we hold them accountable, if we’re talking about work or the house. It’s when we move into the territory of personal rejuvenation, care and fun that they’ll often struggle. It’s a needless struggle – even in the busiest of lives, we still have choices.
