Hi Friend,

I hope this message finds you well!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen pictures of our staycation adventures this week. My husband took a week+ off, and it was really special to have this quality time as a family. Lots of biking, swimming, grilling, a little extra "me" time (for a daily run), and some blended cocktails to get in the spirit (not in my usual repertoire, but we had some really hot days, and I was trying to make it feel like a vacation after all!). See below for our favorite, the spicy watermelon margarita. Soooo good!!

We're living through crazy times, the news is awful, and the stress in our lives is real--for many, it's unprecedented. I hope you also find some quiet time to recharge and tune in to what's most important.

Here are a few things I wanted to share from this past week:

One More Reason to Sweat

Getting back into running has made me realize how much I missed the more intense workouts that I used to do at my gym (pre-covid). It feels so good to get a good sweat, and it's also a way for our bodies to detoxify. I've read several pieces that challenge this claim, but many doctors and health experts strongly support it. And multiple studies have shown that we release heavy metals like arsenic, lead, and mercury in sweat, indicating that it's an added bonus of exercise and sauna use.

Kaleifornian Eats & Drinks

Zoodles with pasta sauce

Have you tried zoodles? I recently discovered a hack that saves me time and storage space while delivering a better result than my spiralizer: the julienne setting on my mandoline! See my post for more info. Zucchinis are still in season, so it's a perfect time to test this out! Zoodles make a great veggie side or GF pasta substitute.

Veggie-Loaded Pork Stir Fry with Basil, Ginger & Garlic

I revisited one of my go-to stir fry recipes and added some kick with sliced jalapenos-- a great idea from my mom. Delicious! Check out the full recipe: Veggie-Loaded Pork Stir Fry with Basil, Ginger & Garlic. If you have a chance to make it, I'd love to know what you think! You can rate or drop a comment at the bottom of the post.

Spicy Watermelon Mezcal Margarita

Spicy Watermelon Mezcal Margaritas-- hands down the best cocktail we've had in years. And no sweetener / simple syrup needed! Instruction: Blend 2-3 cups of cubed, frozen watermelon, 1-2 cups of ice, 1/2 cup of mezcal (white tequila would be fine too), and the juice of 2 limes. Pour into glasses and garnish with  / stir in a couple of sliced jalapenos. Enjoy!

A Podcast I Liked: Why Most Everything We Were Told About Dairy Is Wrong

This episode of The Doctor's Farmacy with Dr. Mark Hyman is an interview with David Ludwig, MD, PhD, a preeminent expert in his field as an endocrinologist and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. Take a listen to learn more about his guideline for 0-2 servings of dairy a day (compared to the 3 servings of reduced fat that are currently recommended), why quality is so important, what the data actually says about fractures and bone health, and what you might not know about the dairy industry or their lobbying efforts. I found it to be a very balanced perspective and enjoyed the combination of Hyman's clinical experience and Ludwig's extensive research. Here's a link to the Medium article that's mentioned a few times in the conversation.

As always, thank you so much for reading! Wishing you a safe and healthy week ahead.

Be Well,

Jess XO
