Kickoff Meeting Recap

Thank you to over 40 partners who joined our Virginia Fund IRL Coalition Kickoff Call on October 27th! We were thrilled to hear from Katie Matlin, Senior Manager for Fund IRL at the Children's Funding Project, who shared how the national campaign is working to ensure social media settlement funds go toward repairing and preventing harm to kids and youth. Katie walked through Fund IRL's recommendations and principles for investing the funds and how Fund IRL is providing support for states in numerous ways.

We also heard an update from Commonwealth Strategy Group on the Virginia budget process and timeline. While the Attorney General will make recommendations, the General Assembly will ultimately decide how the Meta settlement funds are spent, with that process unfolding between now and April 2027.

Jen Rinehart from Afterschool Alliance also joined the call and applauded the coalition's early momentum, including a published op-ed and engagement with the AG's office. Jen shared perspectives and ideas around what other state coalitions have been doing, which includes youth ambassador programs, youth surveys and listening sessions, postcards and petitions from young people, and state-specific fact sheets. Most importantly, she encouraged us to keep growing a broad coalition including mental health partners, child advocacy groups, and others.

Mark your calendars for the next coalition meeting on Monday, November 16 at 2:00 PM! In the meantime, please reach out to Sarah Morgan, our coalition manager, with your ideas, suggestions, or questions. We want your voice to be heard, and help us spread the word to others!

While not every step happens publicly, please know that VPOST is working diligently behind the scenes to keep the ball rolling. We will continue building awareness, engaging key stakeholders, and advancing the conversation.

VPOST will send weekly correspondence to coalition members with updates, resources, and opportunities related to Fund IRL. We encourage you to share these updates with your networks to help us continue expanding awareness across Virginia's out-of-school time community.
