Connecting Our Village to Fund IRL

Dear Virginia Fund IRL Coalition Members,

VPOST's conference theme this year reflects the importance of community support through the African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child." The Maasai people of Kenya and East Africa have a traditional greeting, "Kasserian Ingera," which translates to "And how are the children?" Asked of parents and non-parents alike, this greeting acknowledges that a community's health reflects how it treats children. Youth must be centered and protected.

In so many ways, this theme is relevant to the Fund IRL campaign. As a coalition member, you join colleagues in solidarity to advocate for youth protection and health. Your participation signals that adults are responsible for all children.

If you haven't already, we invite you to register and join us for the conference in Williamsburg on November 2nd. It's an excellent opportunity for the coalition to connect IRL. At the conference, you'll have the opportunity to participate in a Fund IRL table talk discussion. Virginia Delegate Dr. Mark Downey will offer remarks, and Afterschool Alliance will share practical strategies for hosting policymakers. During the Village Vignette, a young adult will share her journey from afterschool to postsecondary education, and her parent and provider will highlight the positive impact of personal connection in youth programming.

Additionally, we'll have a Fund IRL Commitment Wall. At registration, every attendee will receive a card:

Young people need more opportunities to ___________ IRL.

You'll fill it out and post it on a wall. Your responses will become a part of VPOST's Youth & OST Priorities Brief. This will give us something tangible to take to legislators, the Attorney General's office, foundations, and other coalition partners.

We hope to see you in Williamsburg!

Coalition Spotlight

We're proud of the growing coalition of organizations coming together to support this effort! If you haven't provided your organization's logo yet, please upload it to this folder or email Bridget so we can make sure you're represented.

While not every step happens publicly, please know that VPOST is working diligently behind the scenes to keep the ball rolling. We will continue building awareness, engaging key stakeholders, and moving the conversation forward.

VPOST will send weekly correspondence to coalition members with updates, resources, and opportunities related to Fund IRL. We encourage you to share these updates with your networks to help us continue expanding awareness across Virginia's out-of-school time community.

Thank you for being part of this collective effort.
