Subject: Fund IRL Newsletter & Coalition Updates: Incorporating Youth Voice

Keeping Child and Youth Voice at the Center of Fund IRL

Dear Virginia Fund IRL Coalition Members,

As we continue building this coalition, we want to ensure this effort is grounded in what young people say they need and want. We're asking you to start conversations with the young people you serve by asking a simple question: "What do you want more of in real life?"

We need to hear what young people think would help them connect, belong, have fun, build relationships, learn new things, and spend meaningful time with other people away from screens and social media.

Consider using the guiding questions below to keep child and youth voice centered in your Fund IRL discussions:

  • What opportunities do you wish you had more of with other young people?

  • What makes you feel connected to other people?

  • What would make you want to put your phone down and participate?

  • What kinds of activities, experiences, or places would you like to see in your community?

  • What do adults not understand about what young people need right now?

  • If you could create the perfect "real-life" experience for young people, what would it include?

You can gather responses through group conversation, short surveys, sticky notes, advisory groups, or whatever approach works best for your program! Don't feel the need to steer their answers. You want to hear what they actually think, even when their answers surprise you.

VPOST Youth Advocacy Guide - Help Youth Craft their Stories

Out-of-School Time (OST) Programs are a place for youth to discover their passions and connect with adults and peers alike. Who better to tell decision-makers the power of OST programs? Speaking truth to power can seem intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! Use the VPOST Youth Advocacy Guide to help your students craft their unique OST story.

Coalition Spotlight

We're proud of the growing coalition of organizations coming together to support this effort! If you haven't provided your organization's logo yet, please upload it to this folder or email Bridget so we can make sure you're represented.

While not every step happens publicly, please know that VPOST is working diligently behind the scenes to keep the ball rolling. We will continue building awareness, engaging key stakeholders, and advancing the conversation.

VPOST will send weekly correspondence to coalition members with updates, resources, and opportunities related to Fund IRL. We encourage you to share these updates with your networks to help us continue expanding awareness across Virginia's out-of-school time community.

Thank you for being part of this collective effort.
