VPH NEWSLETTER: SEPTEMBER 2020
Due to the difficulties connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the VPH2020 conference took place from the 24th to the 28th of August 2020 completely on-line. Despite the new digital format, the conference proved to be extremely successful, not only by attracting a very large number of participants, but also by presenting an innovative program with a special COVID-19 day, very interesting sessions and great science!
POLICY NEWS
The EU public consultation on Horizon Europe's first Strategic Plan was launched on the 1st of Sept 2020 and will close on the 18th of Sept 2020 18:00 Brussels time. Have your say on the Plan that will guide the work programmes and topics for the new programme’s first four years.
On 24 July 2020, the Commission appointed Jean-Pierre Bourguignon as interim President of the European Research Council. Prof. Bourguignon took over on 27 July and will be in office until the next Presidential election.
The European Commission has recently published a summary report detailing the key highlights of an online workshop on the pharmaceutical strategy for Europe organised on 14-15 July 2020.
On 11 August, the European Commission published its evaluation on the legislation for medicines for rare diseases and for children.
VPH COMMUNITY
For the first time at the recent VPH2020 Conference, the VPH institute has awarded the honorary memberships to two senior researchers who have made, and are continuing to make, extraordinary contributions to the field of in silico medicine and the VPHi community: Prof Denis Noble and Prof Marco Viceconti.
The Avicenna Alliance organised its first Avicenna Day 2020 as an on-line event that took place on Tuesday 25th of August 2020 during the VPH2020 conference.

The white paper entitled “IN-Silico trials for treatment of acute Ischemic STroke" describing the main concepts of the INSIST project has recently been published in the journal “Frontiers in Neurology”
The first edition has just ended last week: positive feedbacks from the students.

The call for apply for a seat in the Board of Directors of the VPHi Institute is now open. Board members are selected to drive the Institute’s policy and define the annual activity plan the VPHi will focus over the year. STUDENT COMMITTEE
At the last day of the VPH2020 conference, Anna Corti was awarded with the Best VPHi Student Award and had the possibility to present her work in plenary during the VPHi award ceremony. Many congratulations to Anna!
Antoine Motte dit Falisse (KULeuven) and Lorenzo Sala (University of Strasbourg) are the winners of respectively the Best VPHi Thesis Award in In Silico Medicine and the Best VPHi-InSilicoTrials PhD Thesis Award in In Silico Medicine for potential application in industrial R&D. At the VPHi conference they presented their research work in plenary during the VPHi Award Ceremony.
Disc4All is a ITN-ETN EU project coordinated by UPF that focuses on advancing integrated computational simulations in translational medicine applied to intervertebral disc degeneration.
