POLICY NEWS
On 24 October 2017 the European Commission adopted its 2018 Work Programme
- Two new calls under H2020
On 27 October 2017 two new calls were published: one on the Digital Transformation in Health and Care and the second one on Better Health and Care, Economic Growth and Sustainable Health Systems

- Commission to invest €2.7 billion in launch of European Innovation Council
On 27 October, the EC presented details of the areas of investment for 2018-2020 for the Horizon 2020 programme and launched the first phase of the European Innovation Council

- Digital visionaries to win €150,000 in 2017 European Social Innovation Competition
On 27 October the Commission awarded three projects with the Equality Rebooted prize

- Health in the Digital Society
Vytenis Andriukaitis, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety presented preliminary findings of the public consultation on a digital health and care policy paper to be adopted in the coming months
- Joint statement by Commissioners Navracsics and Moedas on the EU's approach to maximise the impact of science
On 5 October the Joint Research Centre published a study in Nature which appears to confirm that EU researchers perform considerably well due to the scientific openness of European countries

- Latest results: EC to invest €5.9 million in 119 innovative businesses
The latest round of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument selected 119 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 24 countries for funding
- Partnerships in research and innovation boost the economy
Research partnerships between the EU, the private sector and the Member States are on track to deliver on their objectives, to improve people's lives and to increase Europe's international competitiveness.

VPH COMMUNITY
At the recent GA held in Leuven on 28 Sept 2018, it was announced the composition of the VPHi BoD for the upcoming year: all the 12 institutions that formed the BoD in 2017 have confirmed their commitment to lead VPHi for 2018.

As usual at this time of the year we ask all our members to renew their membership. 
On October 24th, the eHealth Stakeholder Group had a meeting in Brussels. The VPHi was represented by our executive director, Prof Lies Geris.
On 27 Sept 2017 the Research WG had its third meeting of the year
The FDA representative will actively collaborate with the activities of the Research WG
SMARTool project aims to develop a platform based on cloud technology for clinical decision support to the management of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).  Help the project team designing the most suitable solution considering final users' needs.

University of Patras in Greece, provides a Biomedical Engineering Master’s Program strongly concentrated on VPH. Focus is given both on theoretical foundations and applied elements of biomedical engineering
