POLICY NEWS
On 12 January, FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb presented the Agency’s 2018 Strategic Roadmap, providing an overview of some of the key priorities.
On 13 December, the Commission adopted its Annual Health Work Programme 2018 for the implementation of the Third Health Programme, setting out the priorities and actions to be undertaken in the coming months.
On 11 January, the Commission unveiled an investment plan to build a world-class supercomputers infrastructure.
Three working groups have recently been created by the EC, to support the implementation of the Digitising European Industry action plan.
In 2018, patient data exchange between EU Member States is expected to take off.
Over the Christmas break, the EC published a number of articles showcasing the value of High Performance Computing (HPC). One of them focused on the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens’ use of HPC in relation to drug development.
The Presidency of the Council of the EU works on a rotation basis, with each Member State holding the presidency for a period of six months. Bulgaria took the helm of the Council on 1 January.

On 11 January in Amsterdam a group of selected experts led by Lies Geris (VPHi Ex Dir) met to discuss in full details the FET CSA proposal.
On 18 December 2017, Interface Focus published a themed issue ‘The virtual physiological human: translating the VPH to the clinic’ organised by Alfons Hoekstra, Frank Gijsen, Ed van Bavel, Marie Siebes and Liesbet Geris.

The webinar is the second of a series that CompBioMed is organising in collaboration with the VPHi and it will be delivered by SURFsara (NL), the Dutch national high-performance computing and e-Science support centre, and the INSIGNEO group from the University of Sheffield (UK). 
University of Sheffield has recently released a new cutting edge programme of study to form a new generation of scientists, using computerised techniques to improve disease diagnosis and treatment in the healthcare sector.
Registration will be opened until the 19 January 2018 - 10 travel grants available!!
