-------------------------------------------------------
What's the leading cause of accidental death?
-------------------------------------------------------

What would you guess?

Car accidents?

Gunshots?

It's pharmaceutical opioids (painkillers)

Prescription drugs the leading cause of accidental death in North America.

It's a statistic that has led some experts to call prescription drug abuse an epidemic.

Typically what happens is a opioid painkiller such as Oxycontin is combined with alcohol, and the person just doesn't wake up, dying of respiratory distress.

Drug-related accidental deaths have officially outnumbered those caused by car accidents for the first time since the government began collecting data on the behavior in the late 1970s, according an analysis by the Los Angeles Times.

In 2009 alone, some 37,500 Americans succumbed to drug overdoses, many fueled by prescription drug abuse or a combination of mixing medications with each other, alcohol or recreational drugs.

This is compared to approximately 33,800 deaths from car accidents that same year, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

------------------------------------
In our dogs and cats
------------------------------------

Number of animals in the U.S. that die each year from cruelty, neglect, and exploitation: 30 million

Number of cats and dogs euthanized by U.S. shelters each year: 3 – 4 million (nearly 10,000 animals killed every day)

Number of pets that accidentally die from prescription drugs?....unknown

We aren't tracking or studying it.

But based on the surprising large people statistics, you can infer that it is FAR more than you or I can imagine.

----------------------------------
So What Can You do?
----------------------------------

If you are on a opiod, be aware of the side effects and NEVER mix them with alcohol

Be fully aware of the potential side effects of any prescription drug ( or any drug for that matter), that your pet is on.

Know what could happen.

As in liver or kidney disease secondary to anti-inflammatories.

Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time.

Consider alternatives....supplements, herbs, hands on healing remedies with few to no side effects.
