Hi Friend,

My last dog was Hoochie...many of you know the story, and I'm sure a few of you wonder if it was real..

All 'real'

He was a great Shep/Lab cross, rescued from the 1st veterinary clinic I worked at ( Central Park Veterinary Clinic in Burnaby BC).. someone didn't pay their bill, and he was left for whatever..

He was to be sent to the SPCA

Perhaps adopted, perhaps to be euthanized.

I immediately took to him..A little shy, but super good natured...we instantly bonded.

He was still a pup ( 6 months), long gangly legs, and he loved to chew shoes..

Although I gave the 'keep your dog in a kennel speech', Hoochie whined, I let him out of the kennel, and he slept on my bed.

My girlfriend at the time ( who was also a vet), wasn't super impressed, but she caved, and Hoochie soon had the prime spot between us.

He went wherever I went.

I went to work..and so did he.

I ran...he ran. There is a big race in Vancouver called the Vancouver Sun
Run.. The 1st year of the race, he was the 1st dog to cross the finish line!..pretty good in that it was 6 miles, and we did it in 45 minutes or so.

Hoochie's life was pretty good.

LOTS of dog walks/runs.

Socializing with other dogs at work.

Rabbit chasing near the beach.

Visits to my families farm in Lillooet..

Being a concerned pet owner, and veterinarian, I gave him ALL the conventional  treatments.

Yearly vaccines.

Only dry commercial pet food.

And when he developed arthritis, I started him on regular anti-inflammatories.

I really expected him to live until at least 15 or 16.

But that was not the case.

One day at the age of only 8, he was really slow going for a run. In fact I had to stop.

At the clinic I did blood work-

I was thinking a tooth infection.

It showed marked anemia- Ultrasound revealed a splenic mass.

He had hemangiosarcoma- cancer of the spleen.

I performed surgery, but the cancer had spread.

3 weeks later he died suddenly as I walked into the clinic with my son...

So Yes that all happened.

And it really did get me to question WHAT I was doing as a veterinarian, and

whether or not I contributed to it.

Clearly I did.

Too many vaccines.

The WRONG food

Harmful 'conventional' medications.

ALL of this made it more likely for him to develop cancer.

SO what can you do different?

Well learn from my mistakes.

Follow some of what I suggest in my newsletters.

More importantly, use some of what I am now doing for my 2 'new' dogs Jessie ( who is 15), and Lewis who is 9 going on 10.

Both have had NOT a serious illness in their lives.

You'll learn more about my 'secret' tomorrow.

P.S. Is there one 'magic' pill?

Nope.

Bad things can still happen.

BUT there are specific things that you can do to lessen the chances of that
from happening.

You'll need to read tomorrow's newsletter to find out.
