-------------------------------------------
Pets and People Can Break Your Heart
-------------------------------------------

I was married young...

Barely 25, not a whole lot of life experience- in fact I was still in Veterinary College

She was older, had been previously married.

My first serious relationship.

We weren't completely compatible, but I was convinced I could make it work...

I'll never forget this sinking feeling after arguing about something in the Airport awaiting the flight to go on our honeymoon.

And as the plane took off, I had this foreboding that this marriage was not about to last, and WHAT had I done.....

Long story short

It didn't

She re-married soon after we split up- and agreed that we were not 'MEANT' to be together....

--------------------------------------------------
As a NEW Veterinarian I meet..........
--------------------------------------------------

I am working at my first job as a NEW veterinarian.

Somewhat jaded about relationships, and trying to get my head around practicing.

Wall up

Guarded Heart.

A slightly older puppy gets left at the clinic after recovering from Parvovirus.

Owner can't pay the bill, and chooses to leave his dog.

The pup was shy, and destined to go to the SPCA

Not really interacting with people.

I was in some sort of cranky mood, and who do I feel lick my hand through the cage?

This abandoned pup.

He had a funny name...'Hoochie'

I took him out for a walk- he had fully recovered from Parvo, and was about to go to the shelter.

He stares at me.

Then follows me around the clinic, wagging his tail.

How could I NOT warm up to him?

I imagine him going to the shelter, may or may not be adopted, potentially be euthanized, and that night I make the decision to adopt him

A WONDERFUL dog

My BEST pet ever.

We were inseparable.

He went everywhere I went.

Always to work ( except the Cats Only Clinic :-)  )

Slept in my bed

Hiking/Biking/Running...

---------------------------------------------
Who taught me to TRUST........
---------------------------------------------

I completely opened up after getting Hoochie

My walls came down, and I learned from Hoochie to trust again.

If your not a pet owner/guardian, you'll never 'get it'

But the bond that you can feel with a pet that you connect with is HUGE

Definitely with Hoochie

He was at ALL the significant moments in my life...

When I met my future wife, he was there- IF she didn't like dogs or he didn't like her, it wasn't going to last ( but he did and she LOVED him)

He was at the beginning when I first bought the Nelson Animal Hospital ( my first practice)

Hoochie flew from Nelson to Nova Scotia to be part of the wedding ( he howled when my brother Michael played the bagpipes... :-)   - no reflection on the bagpipe player of course...

Hoochie was there at the birth of my son Liam- he loved Liam and was always super gentle..

I imagined he would live well in to his teens-

---------------------------------------------------
Hoochie gets Sick
---------------------------------------------------

But as he turned 8, he became sick.

Hoochie was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma ( splenic tumor), and 3 weeks after the diagnosis, he suddenly died while walking into the back door of the clinic.

Heartbreak again.

I NEVER imagined he would die so young.

It took a long time to deal with the grief- it's hard to explain unless you've been through it yourself.

It does eventually get better

Although you NEVER fully get 'over it'

I still remember Hoochie well to this day- and he died nearly 10 years ago.

Did it hurt A TONNE to have Hoochie die?

Yes

Was it worth it to have him as part of my life?

More than he could know.

Yes pets can BREAK your heart.

But look what they give you.

So much more

Hochie did that for me-

And I wouldn't change a thing.

Heal Your Pet At Home!

Best Wishes,

Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

P.S. I can't say enough about the benefits of pet ownership.

And so many times our pets do SO much more for us than we EVER do for them.

If you have a pet/pets, and that special bond, enjoy it IMMENSELY and be Thankful.

P.P.S. In the vein of helping, I am donating 10% OF ALL proceeds to the AARCS, an Animal Shelter in Need
