[DrAndrew] Visiting my Mom ( with pics)

December 8th, 2011 at 5:52 am EDT

Hello and Good morning fellow readers.

I am returning from a very short visit seeing my mom at her extended care home in Salmon Arm, and then seeing my brother Ian and his family.

On the trip I went with my daughter Aliza, along with my 2 faithful dogs, Lewis and Jessie.

Jessie was my father's dog, and the 2 of them used to visit my mom regularly.

IN fact over 6 different staff members all came up to say HI to Jessie..he is somewhat of a celebrity there.

Unfortunately my mom is in a wheelchair, with progressive dementia, so the visits are short and can be somewhat depressing.

BUT she always remembers the animals, most of the time remembers me, and lights up when I talk about her cat Gussie ( which I now have)

MY point in all this?

Not sure

Except to say that enjoy your health now, and make a point of connecting with your family.

Here is my Mom with us visiting this summer..

I am sure my mom never imagined spending her last days in an extended care home.

IF you have to have a loved one in an extended care home, check to see IF they will at least allow pets to visit.

I am not really happy about my mom's situation, but I can see that she is cared for well, and that comes from the attitude of the staff...and they all seem to be big pet people.

Thanks for listening :-)

Best Wishes,

Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

P.S. Here are the star attractions:

Jessie the celebrity..

My mom's cat Gussie ( that's her in my office...the queen)
