Dr Jones on ABC's 20/20

November 21st, 2013 at 7:50 am EDT
Hello Friend,

A happy Thursday to you, and all of your significant others- furry or not!

A few weeks ago I was contacted by ABC News who are doing an investigative veterinary news story on 20/20.

I was flown to New York, was picked up by a Limo, put up in  a nice hotel, interviewed in the studio with other 'big whig' news people around such as their lead anchor, Diane Sawyer, saw some of Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and the new Freedom Tower.

I survived a crazy drive back to the airport, then yesterday had more filming done at my home here in Nelson..

Cool

The story will be informative, although I doubt I will be making many friends in the veterinary world..

The show is scheduled to air tomorrow night at 10PM.

Here is a rather not so great 'selfie' with the Statue of Liberty in the sun...
              'Red Eye'- New natural remedies
The causes of ‘red eye‘ are numerous. The most common are bacterial conjunctivitis, bacterial infection of the tissue around the eye, and allergic conjunctivitis. Other, more serious causes include glaucoma (swelling in the eye) or an ulcer on the cornea (erosion on the surface of the eye).

Conjunctivitis is defined as inflammation of the red, conjunctival tissue around your pet’s eye. It is the most common cause of red eye in dogs and cats.

First if your dog or cat has an irritated, infected eye, have your veterinarian look at it. It may be something more serious, such as glaucoma.

Signs such as eye rubbing, eye pain by avoiding light, 'bulging' of the eye, having the lid completely closed, an ulcer which will show as an erosion in the surface of the eye and often very painful, all suggest a more serious eye condition requiring veterinary care.

And if your not sure, then please see your vet.

But if this is just a simple infection of the tissue around the eye, there are many at home remedies that can be used for conjunctivitis.

Marigold (Calendula officinalis): soothes irritation

Plantain (Plantago lanceolata, P. major): astringent and soothing. The fresh leaves are the most effective plant part. These can be steamed as a tea, allowed to cool, then placed in the eye

Other herbal treatments may include:
Grated fresh potato has astringent (drying and disinfecting) properties.
