[Dr Andrew] More foods recalled over aflatoxin levels

January 3rd, 2012 at 4:30 am EDT

A few weeks ago I told you about dog food being recalled with 'unacceptable' levels of aflatoxin.

My first thoughts are to try and feed less commercial food, and use some of the recipes in my Inner Circle. You can get a great deal to get ALL of the recipes here:

This is a fungal toxin that in serious cases can cause death, but is actually ALLOWED to be in dog and cat food.

DVM360 reported on an updated story which may or may not affect you and your pet:

DVM NEWSMAGAZINE

National Report — Two more dry dog foods have been recalled due to high aflatoxin levels, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Petrus Feed and Seed Store, Inc. announced a recall of its 21% Protein Dog Food in 40-pound Petrus Feed bags. The affected products were manufactured at Cargill’s manufacturing facility located in LeCompte, La., between December 1, 2010 and December 1, 2011. The recall originally applied to lot numbers, 4K1011 through 4K1307. Updated lot numbers are 4K1011 through 4K1335. The affected product was distributed in Petrus Feed and Seed in Alexandria, La.

O’Neal’s Feeders Supply, Inc. has also recalled its dry Arrow brand dog food due to high aflatoxin levels. The affected products were manufactured between Dec. 1, 2010, and Dec. 1, 2011. No illnesses have been reported in association with these products to date. Affected products include: Arrow brand 21% Dog Chunks, SKU #807, 40-pound bag; Arrow brand Super Proeaux Dog Food, SKU #812, 40-pound bag; Arrow brand Professional Formula Dog Food, SKU #814, 50-pound bag. The recall only applies to products with lot numbers 4K0341 through 4K0365 and 04K1001 through 4K1325. The products were distributed in Louisiana and Texas.

My suggestion would be to completely avoid this in your pet's food.

This is accomplished via avoiding grains- use a healthy carbohydrate such as sweet potato.

There are many commercial dog diets with sweet potato. For you cat owners it is far better to AVOID the carbs all together.

P.P.S. Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins that are produced by many species of Aspergillus, a fungus, most notably Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus.

Aflatoxins are toxic and among the most carcinogenic substances known.

After entering the body, aflatoxins are metabolized by the liver to a reactive intermediate, aflatoxin M1, an epoxide.

Initial signs are gastro-intestinal, meaning vomiting, diarrhea, being nauseaus, lethargic.

It then primary affects the liver, and it can cause:

lethargy and depression
loss of appetite
severe vomiting
bloody diarrhea
jaundice (yellow coloration of the gums and skin)
weakness
seizures
death

My suggestion would be to completely avoid this in your pet's food.

This is accomplished via avoiding grains- use a healthy carbohydrate such as sweet potato.
