URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS in DOGS

UTI stands for urinary tract infection. It’s what happens when bacteria such as E coli (which accounts for 40-50% of bladder infections in dogs), Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, or Streptococcus infecting your dog’s bladder or kidneys. More common in female dogs.

SIGNS and SYMPTOMS

  • Frequent urination
  • Your dog may suddenly want to go outside all the time and squat multiple times during one “potty trip.”
  • Passing small amounts of urine at a time
  • Each time your dog urinates, he or she may only get out small amounts of urine. This can be hard to notice.
  • Bloody or cloudy urine
  • Your dog’s urine may be cloudy or have a pinkish hue to it. Or you may see clumps of blood in the urine.
  • Accidents in the house
  • Due to the increased urgency for urination and irritation of the urinary tract, sometimes dogs who are normally well housetrained will have urinary accidents inside.
  • Straining to urinate or having difficulty urinating

SOLUTIONS

GOOD BACTERIA: probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that help your dog on antibiotics, and help boost immune response.
In particular, probiotics in the Lactobacillus group may help treat and prevent UTIs, according to some older 2017 research. They may do this by: preventing harmful bacteria from attaching to urinary tract cells. producing hydrogen peroxide, a strong antibacterial agent, in urine.

CRANBERRY. A traditional home remedy used for people with recurrent urinary tract infections. The beneficial effects are from the acidification of the urine and by making it more difficult for the bacteria to adhere to the bladder wall. The dose of the juice is 1 ml per lb daily, add the dose of the tablets, such as CranActin, is 1/2 capsule per 10 lbs daily.

HONEY: honey in particular is very effective again many of the common bacteria to stop bacteria such as e.coli that can be causing these recurrent urinary tract infections. Doses of 1/2 teaspoon/10lbs twice daily.

GREEN TEA and HONEY. Green Tea also has many antibacterial properties, working especially well combined with the honey. 1 tablespoon of green tea, mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey. Give 1/2 that amount twice a day to a 10lb dog. Start by making 1 cup of concentrated Green Tea
