Hello Friend,

Is it OK to keep changing my dog's food, or should I stay on the same diet all the time?
Diet rotation involves varying your dog’s food- typically weekly, but can be daily or monthly..

Reasons why you should consider this..

We don’t know the *exact* nutrients every dog should have all the time..some have too much of some nutrients, others won’t have enough..

Toxins in pet foods- specifically aflatoxins, toxins in the food resulting in deaths from current imported Jerky treats, and melamine in food during the pet food recall

Ingredients from countries with less stringent regulations- not all manufacturers are ethical, and may do things to save, such as not being as hygenic, or putting on 'contaminated' wheat

Concerns around meal/by products- this can include the 4 D's- diseased, dying, dead and disabled animal meat products in the food

Preservatives, still much of the food is chemically perserved, and these may be harming your dog

Carbohydrates are increasingly linked to disease- such as obesity, diabetes, and speeding cancer progression

By rotating your switching dog’s food, the unhealthy consequences can be minimized.

Not every dog

Some dogs have difficulty with changes, or specific medical conditions ( ie food allergy, IBD). These dogs need to keep a uniform diet.

My personal take is that it’s risky to keep feeding the same food all the time.

I feed my dogs kibble, a stew once or twice a week, plus raw once a week- more often now it’s defrosted chicken backs

Veterinary Secrets Pet of the Day!
Bes, my intelligent and handsome 1 year 4 month old Egyptian Mau. Love him to pieces! I even grind chicken breast meat, freeze it by the cup, and take it out as I need it, and bake it. Then, I cut it up in little pieces, and keep in the fridge for treats.

Soooo much healthier than store bought treats. ~Kristina :-)

P.S. Bes does not have free reign of the outdoors. Only goes out with his mamma.
