[Beware] Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB's)

June 28th, 2012 at 7:08 am EDT

Have you ever noticed that 'green sludge' that forms in the water

during the summer?

It's algae growing, and certain types are very toxic- in fact

there are some large Canadian Lakes ( ie Lake Erie, Lake Huron,

Lake Ontario, and Lake Winnipeg) that are seeing more alge blooms.

In a quick nutshell, what happens is that chemical fertilizer from

farmers fields washes off, in to the water supply, then into the

lakes.

This is the primary nutrient source for the Algae.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here's what you should know about Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB's)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

HABs can produce neurotoxins (which affect the nervous system) and

hepatotoxins (which affect the liver).  These toxins can

potentially impact the health of people who come into contact with

water where HABs are present in high numbers.

Under the right water conditions, which usually occur in the

warmer months, the number of these blue-green algae can

dramatically increase, or “bloom.” Scientists do not fully

understand what causes the same species of algae to trigger toxin

production during one bloom and not produce toxin during the next.

Some cyanobacterial blooms can look like foam, scum, or mats on

the surface of fresh water lakes and ponds. The blooms can be

blue, bright green, brown, or red and may look like paint floating

on the water. Some blooms may not affect the appearance of the

water.

Humans and pets can get sick from exposure to cyanobacteria

toxins. However, the development of illness will depend on the

type of cyanobacteria, the levels in the water and the type of

contact an individual has had with this “algae.”

------------------------------------------------------------------
How do you treat people or animals that have been exposed to HAB

toxins?
------------------------------------------------------------------

If you do come into contact with the HAB contaminated water, rinse

off with clean, fresh water as soon as possible.

Pets that have been swimming in an area with a HAB may ingest

significant amounts of toxins by licking their fur after leaving

the water. Thoroughly rinse of your pets with clean, fresh water.

Seek medical treatment ASAP if you think you, your pet, or your

livestock might have been poisoned by toxic HAB.

Remove people from the exposure and seek medical treatment if

symptoms occur.

P..S. Please use some common sense, and keep your dogs ( and

children) out of algae contaminated water.

But if they happen to be ill, at least know what you can do at

first.

Such as treating toxins..
