20/20 video and critical vet response

Hello Friend,

A happy Monday to you and your family this frigid Monday.

As many of you know, I was recently featured on ABC's 20/20..

The segment is professionally done, and does present a fair and balanced view of the veterinary profession.

You can see the segment on my blog here:

Hi Dr. Jones,

I saw your recent 20/20 piece and being a veterinarian myself, I must say I was very sad by how you portrayed our profession. I'm not saying it's perfect and that every vet is ethical (no field is perfect) however, I feel that as a profession we hold ourselves to a higher moral standard and most vets would not practice the way you portrayed in the 20/20 episode. There may be practices out there that do this but most vets would leave that practice based on their ethics and find employment elsewhere. It sounds like you had a bad experience at a practice and sadly your own ethics were too weak to allow you to quit and find a new practice to work for so instead you went along with practices you didn't agree with-seems to me that this makes YOU even less moral/ethical. You should re-evaluate yourself before you falsely accuse the entire veterinary field of being unethical as the majority of vets are indeed ethical and if they had been in your shoes their ethics would have lead them to leave that practice. I was also saddened to see that you have a website where you sell DVDs (oh and by the way you mention the big "C" word on your website so you must be trying to scare people and use their emotions to get them to buy your DVD, just as you claimed vets in practice "scare" the owners into allowing for testing). It seems to me that the whole 20/20 episode was just a marketing ploy for your website and business. Seems to me the only thing you proved on the 20/20 episode was your own poor character and questionable ethics.
If you truly want to make a positive influence on the profession there are many appropriate ways to go about it.

Ashamed to say you are a fellow veterinarian, Gina

Veterinary Secrets Pet of the Day!
Reika

Hi Dr Jones,
>
> Here's a picture of our girl, Reika, a ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback. She used to be a certified Delta Therapy Dog (now called Pet Partners) in California but we moved to Germany almost two years ago and they do not allow dogs in their hospitals and our trips to schools will begin again as soon as I learn a little more German. :-)
>
> Photo 1: My husband has taught Reika to differentiate amongst her stuffed toys. Her favorite is, "Find the LION" as is appropriate for our Ridgey. Photo 2: My husband has taught our girl how to "Wink" - not a particularly useful task but darn cute and popular when she visits special needs children. We titled the photo "Just Kidding" because she has no kill instinct whatsoever as she has accumulated an interesting group of friends (cats, horses, Guinean pig, hedgehog, calf, etc) since arriving in Germany. We consider ourselves very blessed to have such a wonderful girl!

P.S. First I expect criticism- it's not always popular to speak out and take a stand.

I don't hold myself out to be an ideal role model, and in the video I own up to not being this flawless veterinarian.

I am curious as to what you may thing..Feel free to leave a comment about the video, the critical vet, or your related experiences on my blog here:
