| September 11 will never be just an ordinary day to me.
No matter how many years go by.
I remember each moment like it was yesterday.
What I was thinking.
The disbelief and anguish…
The shattered family members, wandering the streets of New York in vain as they searched for their loved ones. Hoping beyond hope that they’d return...
The brave first responders who charged towards buildings on fire, many of whom lost their lives.
Smoke billowing from the Pentagon, a symbol of our nation’s military might.
And just as important… the collective resilience this country showed in the aftermath.
At that time, it felt like our differences could be bridged. That being American was about the things we shared, not our disagreements.
A collective pride. And the will to fight for what makes this country great.
What those who mean us harm will never, ever understand.
I will never forget that day.
And I hope it doesn’t take another tragedy to rekindle the feelings that bonded us together in the weeks and months that followed.
I often wonder if faced with a test like Todd Beamer did on Flight 93, I’d somehow summon the courage to respond.
Todd Beamer and his fellow passengers struck the first blow in our ongoing fight against terrorism.
It began with two words: “Let’s Roll.”
I will never the thousands of lives that were lost that day.
And I will always be thankful for those who continue the fight to protect our freedoms, each and every day since.
