Homecoming

Earlier this week, the doors of our beloved church opened for the first time in months. Such mundane activities as walking through the High Street gate, wandering down the nave, lighting a candle or sitting down in the chancel had a most extraordinary character as I visited St Mary’s on Monday. It was like greeting an old friend, or returning home after a long journey. The stillness and familiarity of the building, its exquisite silence and distinctive smell of old wood infused with incense, like a warm welcome. I was reminded of this phrase which ends the responsory during compline ‘Hide me under the shadow of your wings’. Indeed, though one doesn’t necessarily need to be in a specific place to engage in prayer and witness the infinite presence of God, there is something comforting and grounding to sitting where many others have sat before us, joining them in their prayers of old, taking refuge under the cover of His wings (Psalm 61).

Covid-19 in the Developing World

Join us with Al Dutton as he reflects on the Covid-19 pandemic and how it is affecting the developing world.

While the number of Covid-19 cases in Europe is declining, the pandemic is just gathering pace in the developing world.  However, despite the potential danger from Covid, people are most worried about the poverty pandemic that Covid has caused.  The World Bank estimates that almost half a billion people will be pushed further into poverty (below US$5.50/day) and, with no savings or assets they can sell, the reality for many is that if they don’t get paid today, they don’t eat today.  Staying at home just isn’t an option.

Al, a parishioner of St Mary’s, is the Chief Executive of the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF – Caritas Scotland) and former Humanitarian Director for Caritas Internationalis, the global humanitarian and development confederation of the Roman Catholic Church.
