“Be still and know that I am God”

Be still. Be still and know that I am God. Such words can be taken as an invitation to the mystical life, to participate fully in the present moment.

Stillness is something that I associate with Lent, as a practice to make time and space for God in our daily lives, as we reflect on the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness.
This year, as Lent coincides with a viral outbreak, stillness might be for some a command more than a choice. As some face isolation or time spent in quarantine — literally ‘forty days’ — this ‘imposed stillness’ can sound daunting and synonymous with loneliness.

We may, like Jesus, have to withdraw ourselves from the world for a while. But I don’t think we will find ourselves ‘alone into the alone’. Rather, in our stillness, the quietness of our lives, we may once again find ourselves witnesses to the infinite presence of God.

Be still and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth — Psalm 46.

Philip O’Neill

Philip O’Neill, a long standing member of our congregation has died at the age of 85. He had worshipped here for over ten years. The funeral will be held at St Mary’s on Saturday, 14 March at 2pm. On Philip's request the service will be followed by glasses of bubbly in the church and then from 4pm on to the Half Moon Pub a short walk down the road. The family have requested that attendees wear traditional funeral dress but with a splash of green as a nod to Philip's Irish roots.

On Saturday 21 March, we will join with the Prayer Book Society for their annual commemoration of the Martyrdom of Thomas Cranmer in 1556. A service of Choral Mattins will take place at 11.00am. The Revd Fergus Butler-Gallie will preach. The service will be followed by a wreath laying at the Martyrs’ Memorial. At 2.00pm, the Revd Canon Dr Judith Maltby will give a lecture at St Mary’s, ‘Hearing the Word’: The Bible, the Prayer Book and Public Worship from Cranmer to 166

Passion and Compassion Oxford

Drawing on the ancient spiritual devotion of the Stations of the Cross, we invite you to participate in a journey of reflection and discovery in the city of Oxford.

Using the website or the mobile application, weave your way around our ancient city, where key works of art can be found - in both religious and secular spaces, from churches to museums, and even city rooftops.

On this journey, you will be accompanied by leading academics, theologians and artists, contemplating the profound meaning of the Stations of the Cross through some of Oxford’s most impressive works of art.

A linked exhibition of all 14 Stations of the Cross will be up in the Adam De Brome Chapel starting this Sunday until Pentecost.
