Music and the church have always had a special relationship. From the church’s very earliest years worship has been aided, enhanced and delivered through beautiful and challenging music. This short series – a mixture of talks, performances and workshops – takes a fascinating in-depth look at the way music and the church engage with each other. (Tie-in creative writing sessions will be advertised separately.)
‘Plain Song’ talks take place on Wednesday evenings in the Old Library (above the Vaults and Gardens Café) at 6.45pm and last approximately one hour. 27 January, 3 February, 10 February, 17 February, 24 February. Speakers include Dr Jonathan Arnold on 20th-century church music; Professor Henrike Lähnemann on German liturgy; Dr Alex Lloyd leading her students in a masterclass in translation; and Professor Philip Bullock on the story behind Tchaikovsky’s Legend.

Work, Sex and Self
A three-part series addressing some of the big things we care about
Often the Church seeks to answer questions that no one is asking. This short series aims to tackle three fundamental subjects that most people (actually) care about. Over three evenings, Revd Canon Brian Mountford MBE will give presentations on contemporary attitudes to work, sex and personal identity. He will address how these attitudes have changed and what role theology might play in shaping and enriching them for the future. Each evening will include a talk, Q&A, and discussion over cheese and wine. 7.30pm–9.00pm in the Vaults Café. 28th January, 11th February and 25th February.
