The new candle holders for the nave altar have arrived and are looking magnificent. Close inspection will be possible this Sunday when they will be used for the first time – both at the Eucharist and at the Advent Carol Service. I know some people thought it was a bit extravagant to commission these, but they will become part of SMV’s heritage and I think it’s good for different generations to contribute to this heritage and not draw some arbitrary line under the past and call it history.

We have received donations amounting to one third of the cost and I’d really like to raise another £3000 if we can. I realise it’s not the best time to ask you, what with Christmas, and other charitable commitments.

Last year several people pointed out that our crib figures fell short of representing the incarnation with any aesthetic refinement. Ever sensitive to what you say, we committed them to the dustbin, and despite a thoroughgoing trawl of the internet undertaken by Penny and Claire, we were unable to find a suitable replacement. Instead we shall have two bronzes by Toddy Hoare: one of a pregnant woman and the other of a mother feeding her child. These will be displayed on the de Brome Tomb during parts of Advent and Christmas.
