Why are Roman Catholics jealous of Anglicans? Because we have choral evensong and they don’t. What a stroke of genius to create a ‘word’ service that is more popular than the sacramental Eucharist and we shall enjoy it again this Sunday at 5pm. It is also an important part of our mission; not only to visitors and tourists attend the service, they also sit spellbound, in considerable numbers, while the choir rehearses. And I think there are few holiday experiences to match wandering, bored, into an ancient building only to be transported by the ethereal sound of a capella choral music. Last week our numbers were boosted by visitors from Preston Hollow, Texas, both morning and evening. It would be good to have a strong home team to host whoever comes to Evensong next Sunday, because if you’re keen on mission here is your opportunity. |

| | ALICE DAY, 4th July, Garden, Radcliffe Square, 11am-2pm ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
One of the most famous opening stanzas of children's verse, these lines from Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" nonetheless perplex. Of 23 words, only half are already known to us; but such is the verdant onomatopoeia and liveliness of this nonsense that we go along with Carroll's epic tone and portentousness. It's creepy and evocative: we want nothing to do with this outgribing mome raths. Sometimes, the sound of words is enough, and we can supply our own meaning.
We'll be performing "Jabberwocky", along with other of Carroll's verse, readings from Alice in Wonderland, creating our own nonsense words and running family craft activities. Join us on the church lawn, 11am-2pm, on Saturday 4th July (as part of the Oxford-wide Alice's Day).
