Welcome back to a new term and many thanks to all those who contributed in various ways to the success of Christmas. We particularly look forward to David Ford's Bampton lectures, the Bishop of Salisbury’s visit on the 8th February at 5.30pm and Carson Becke's piano recital on the 22nd February. Jenyth Worsley has stepped down from the serving rota after many years of valiant service and I’m sure all of us thanks her for all she has done.

Keble and Wordsworth
from “First Sunday after Epiphany (The Nightingale)” in The Christian Year (1827) by John Keble

Lessons sweet of spring returning,
Welcome to the thoughtful heart!
May I call ye sense or learning,
Instinct pure, or Heaven-taught art?
Be your title what it may,
Sweet this lengthening April day,
While with you the soul is free,
Ranging wild o'er hill and lea.[…]

John Keble (1792 –1866) was a key figure in the Oxford Movement who preached at the University Church. In 1827 he published (anonymously) The Christian Year, a series of poems for each Sunday of the liturgical year. It was enormously popular during the Victorian period, and Keble, having become known as the book’s author, was made Oxford’s Professor of Poetry in 1831.

Is, Keble asks, the love of Nature a learned or an inherent trait? Here are strong Romantic echoes of William Wordsworth’s “The Tables Turned” (1798): “Come forth, and bring with you a heart / That watches and receives.”

Volunteer Tour Guides and Welcomers:
Volunteers at the University Church enjoy training sessions, talks, lectures and socials. We have now teamed up with the Bodleian Library tour guides and benefit from guided tours and lectures at the Bodleian.
Volunteer Welcomers, play a vital part in making St. Mary's welcoming for everyone. They are the public face of the church and hand out leaflets, answer visitors' questions and make sure they have an enjoyable visit. Tour Guides lead guided tours for up to 15 people. You don't need any previous knowledge to become a tour guide or a welcomer - enthusiasm for St Mary's and its history is more than enough. Please get in touch with Penny at smv.heritage@gmail.com to sign up for the next volunteer induction day
