Summer at the University Church

by The Revd Canon Dr William Lamb

Trinity Term has ended and so we now look forward to the Long Vacation. We often imagine that this is a relatively quiet period in the life of the University Church, but nothing could be further from the truth. We may not have the intensity of full term to distract us, but the summer season has a busyness of its own as we welcome the many visitors who come to Oxford over the summer to visit the tower or attend services. Our colleagues at Experience Oxfordshire tell us that this summer is set to be one of the busiest in Oxford for visitor numbers. Next week we will welcome participants in the Interfaith Friendship Walk on Thursday evening as they wend their way from the Synagogue in North Oxford to the Mosque in East Oxford. We also have a new exhibition about the vitality of faith in Oxford. The ministry of hospitality remains one of the hallmarks of our life together.

Today marks the publication of What’s On for the Long Vacation 2024. You will see all sorts of things are planned this summer. The Summer Evensong Series has been extended so that it will run throughout the summer. Last year we had record levels of people attending Choral Evensong and we hope that people will join us again for a service which will last approximately 35-40 minutes at 3.30pm in the afternoon. What’s On also speaks of a series of events which will mark the 200th anniversary of the beginning of St John Henry Newman’s public ministry. And there are many wonderful activities planned for children and young families - from Lego Church to a Storytelling Workshop. And if that doesn’t whet your appetite, remember…. the oxen are coming!

Current Exhibition

Hidden Spire
22 April – 30 June  Adam de Brome Chapel
We are thrilled to partner with the Old Fire Station in presenting an exhibition that highlights the art, individuals, and narratives surrounding the Old Fire Station. The Old Fire Station is a place where barriers are crossed. Many different people come there – to make art, watch theatre, drink coffee, attend a creative workshop or try authentic Middle Eastern dishes. Some people come because they have nowhere secure to live. When we come together, the lines dividing us are blurred: an audience member becomes an artist; a volunteer becomes a mentor; a person experiencing homelessness becomes a staff member. We believe that art is for everyone; we believe it can help re-ignite ourself-belief, bring us together and change lives. We hope you enjoy the exhibition. Once you have walked around the exhibition in Adam De Brome Chapel, please visit the Old Fire Station at 40 George Street OX1 2AQ.

Special Events

ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD - 3PM THIS SUNDAY, ST GILES

On 23rd June, our curate, the Revd Naomi Gardom, will be ordained a priest by the Bishop of Oxford. All are welcome to attend the ordination at St Giles Church, Oxford. Naomi will preside at the Eucharist for the first time at the 10.30am Choral Eucharist on Sunday 30th June.

BUILDING HOLINESS - 6PM WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE

The architecture of St Mary’s reveals different visions of the sacredness of space, different ways in which we are encouraged to encounter God within it. Perhaps the most iconic feature is the seventeenth-century Virgin Porch. Join us to reflect on the relationship between architecture, space, and holiness in our building’s past and in our own lives today.

INTERFAITH FRIENDSHIP WALK – THURSDAY 27 JUNE

This year’s Interfaith Friendship Walk will take place on Thursday 27 June, starting at the synagogue in Richmond Rd at 6.00pm and continuing via St Giles Church (6.25pm) and Radcliffe Square (7.00pm) to the Madina Mosque in Stanley Rd. Everyone is welcome and you can join at any point along the route. This is a great opportunity to meet people from other faith communities in Oxford, at a time when friendship and understanding between the faiths is more important than ever. If you can help with stewarding, please speak to Mary Lean.

ST PETER’S EUCHARIST – 12.15PM FRIDAY 28 JUNE ST EDMUND HALL

On Friday 28th, the feast of St Peter, the 12.15pm eucharist will take place in the crypt of the former St Peter-in-the-East Church, on what is now the site of St Edmund Hall. All are welcome.

Join #30DaysWild. One of A Rocha UK’s firm beliefs is that we are more likely to nurture and defend God’s creation if we spend time enjoying it.
