Icons on Ammo Boxes

by the Revd Canon Dr Charlotte Bannister-Parker

You may remember that last autumn the University Church hosted an exhibition of Ukrainian icons painted on the lids of ammunition boxes to raise funds for a frontline ambulance. I want to thank all those who supported our medical supply project through direct donations and or the purchasing of unique icons painted by two famous Ukrainian artists, Sofiia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko. With the support of both the University Church and St John’s Notting Hill (who hosted the exhibition later), the partner charities purchased two vehicles, one to evacuate wounded soldiers and civilians, the other to transport casualties from the frontline back to their grieving families at home.

So far, the New York Times estimates that 70,000 Ukrainians have died and 120,000 are wounded. These figures alert us to the pity of war. As the winter approaches, let us pray for all those affected by this conflict. Let us pray in particular for medical staff seeking to bring relief to those who have been maimed or injured in the course of this conflict.

The Lord shall give strength to his people;

The Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

(Psalm 29.10)

God of strength and peace,

Send your blessing on the people of Ukraine.

Sustain them in their struggles,

Hold them in their fear,

protect them from all danger

and be for them the hope they desire;

for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

LATIN COMMUNION: 8.00AM, THURS 5 OCTOBER

Very soon after the first English Prayer Book appeared in 1549, it was translated into Latin and the use of the Latin Prayer Book continues today at the University Church. Holy Communion is celebrated at the beginning of each term and will take place at 8.00am on Thursday 5th October. The Revd Dr Max Kremer will be the Celebrant.

READ WITH FAITH IN ACTION FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

This Black History Month (October), you are invited to join the Faith in Action Group in reading Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. Described as ‘the book which sparked a national conversation’ it explores many topics, from ‘eradicated black history to the inextricable link between class and race’. Copies are widely available in book shops and online but if you would like to borrow a copy you would be very welcome to, just let Hannah know. You are encouraged to share your reflections with others in the congregation and in your social, work and study circles to keep this important conversation going.

HARVEST COLLECTION FOR THE PORCH - NEXT WEEK, 8 OCTOBER

Next week we will be collecting in aid of The Porch. Donations of sugar, fresh fruit & vegetables (for the ‘Porch Preserves’ enterprise), toiletries & laundry detergent are especially welcome. Please place donations on the Adam DeBrome tomb before the service next week. The Porch provides freshly cooked meals, showers, laundry, and a wide range of support to homeless and vulnerably housed people in Oxford. The cost-of-living crisis has created additional demand as well as significantly higher running costs. The cash collection from 8th October will be donated towards their work and they would very much welcome new volunteers (www.theporch.org.uk).

VICAR’S SLEEPOUT

On World Homeless Day (10th October), the Vicar will be joining colleagues from the Collegiate University, the world of business, and civic representatives on a Sleepout organised by the Oxfordshire Homeless Movement to raise money to support its work with the homeless. If you would like to sponsor him, please visit this link.
