Worry-Free Crisis Planning II - Retain Your Cash
Cash is so important, I devoted a whole chapter to it in my book, The Funding Is Out There! Access the Cash You Need to Impact Your Business.

You need to know how to retain your cash. Cash is what enables you to have the time and space you need to make the requisite changes to weather a crisis and emerge even stronger.

Let me give you an actual example.

A security firm I worked with was struggling. I reviewed the financial statements but items seemed to be missing. So I put together a 12-week cash flow...and was floored! According to the projections, they weren't generating enough money to stay open. Yet they had all these contracts.

The owner explained that she priced her contracts "at cost plus a little bit more". Well, after we walked through her pricing, I realized her "cost" omitted several items so her costs weren't covered.

Digging deeper, I determined that all but two contracts were seriously losing money!! It was her husband's cleaning business that was keeping her $2 million security business afloat.

For two years they had been paying people they knew under the table to perform security services! They had been hemorrhaging cash but had never taken the time to determine why.

Lesson: Always project your cash flow.

This is why I ALWAYS run a 12-week cash flow projection with my consulting clients. Reviewing the financial statements definitely told me there was a big problem. But the owner kept a lot of the costs "off the books". Working with her and her accounting help to complete the cash flow projection immediately alerted me to pricing issues.

The numbers tell a story. What the numbers may be whispering to you, they actually scream to me. I know what to look for. I see patterns. I know what questions to ask.

If you own or run a B2B company and would like to know more about how tools like this can help you manage your cash, spot issues, and structure your operations for the current coronavirus crisis or another crisis like my client had:

  5. Tie your employees’ work to business goals and hold them accountable
  6. Determine KPIs and measure performance
  7. Make adjustments to maintain trajectory

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in business for 3 years or 10 years. This is the framework to build a B2B business that weathers a recession and ultimately generates the cash, produces the profit and supports the growth or lifestyle you envision.
