You've Reached a Checkpoint
The excitement surrounding New Year’s has fizzled out and that champagne is long gone Unfortunately the zeal and vigor of many of those resolutions are also no where to be found. We are halfway through 2015 and we feel the need to have a checkpoint; assess our goals and visions for this year. We hope that you will join us and evaluate your personal (and business) goals as well.

Setting goals aren’t so hard, but carrying them out and managing them can seem like an uphill journey at times. We are here to encourage you to keep pressing, keep moving, and keep striving. Don’t beat yourself up if you’ve fallen off track, didn’t meet goals, or aren’t where you want to be. Remember, as long as you’re breathing, you still have time. Below you will find 10 tips to help you self-manage and persevere through to the end of the year and achieve your goals.

1. REEVALUATE. Assess your goals. Get a clear understanding of why you are pursing them. This action can help rekindle a fire or give you the insight to let some things go and restructure. No matter the outcome, this is a very beneficial and effective step.

2. CONCENTRATE. Choose just a few goals (3 max) to concentrate on at a time. Sure, you may be able to multi-task, but focusing in on a few goals with a strong determination will produce quality and quick results.

3. FOCUS. Figure out what you need to do to really block out distractions and get to a strong mental place where you can truly hone in on the tasks at hand.

4. UNPLUG. Turn off your phone, avoid your social media platforms, and turn off your television. It’s okay to put on some light classical music (studies have shown that this helps relax people and increase their ability to focus). Essentially you need to set yourself up for success and eliminate distractions.

5. SCHEDULE. Create a daily schedule where you can set aside time specifically to work on your goals and make sure that your friends and family know that you are unavailable during these hours (emergencies aside, of course) so that you can work in peace.

6. REJUVENATE. In your scheduling process, be sure to set aside time for yourself. No matter how busy and hectic your life is take the time to relax a little and do something that you enjoy. It is important that you take care of yourself. If you're not healthy and rejuvenated, then you can’t be successful at anything.

7. LIST-IT. Make to-do lists for your goals. These lists will help you to stay focused as well as keep you on track. The bonus to these lists is the joy that you'll feel every time you check something off as completed.

8. WORK. Keep working towards your goals daily and DON'T PROCRASTINATE. Procrastination is the enemy here. Stick to your schedule and finish your list (even when you don't feel like it.) In the very least, set down and make yourself focus on working on your goal for 15 minutes. If you don't spend all of the time you allotted working on your goal, but you put in a solid 15 minutes, you can still walk away with a sense of accomplishment.

9. GET HELP. Enlist the help of good friends and close family to help you stay on track and hold you accountable. Let them know what you're doing and ask them to check in with you periodically to see if you're on track. (This may even encourage some of them to participate with you and you may have you a ‘goal buddy’)

10. ACHIEVE. Look at your goals and create milestones for you to achieve along the way. These little milestones will give you something to look forward to in the near future and heighten your sense of accomplishment. Besides, who doesn't like celebrations of success?

We hope that these tips and this article helps to shed some light on your situation of tackling your goals. These checkpoints are crucial to our success and we see the results of these checkpoints year after year. It is important that you don't feel defeated if you fell off track from getting the progress that you wanted at this point. We are here to inspire you to keep moving and in the process be grateful for what you have at this point in your journey.

My Personal Checkpoint Story

As I began to evaluate my goals for the year and what I have accomplished up to this point I cannot help to reflect back on some areas that I found myself stuck in a month ago. In the past I would spin my wheels trying to figure it out on my own, however this time I decided to seek outside help. Having a team of individuals that support you and perhaps have the skill set to help you tackle that goal is crucial. Two of the individuals that are on my team are my counselor and my life coach. I am sure you are wondering why I would have a counselor. Well to be honest and transparent with you (most counselors would not share this). Counselors struggle with the same areas that their clients struggle with and it is crucial for me as a clinician to seek help to ensure I can maintain a level of emotional well being to for myself, which will ultimately positively impact the services I provide for my clients. The reason most people don't seek counseling is due to a lack of understanding and unwarranted myths that exist.

Here are several of the myths that keep individuals from seeking help:

1. I know myself what needs to be done, I just need to do it.
Precisely. Many of us suffer all sorts of problems because we don't have enough support or motivation to start or to follow through. A counselor can help you to clarify your goals, create feasible strategies that consider the obstacles you are likely to face, and act as a supportive partner in the process.

2. It is awkward to tell a stranger about my problems.
Your therapist is just another human being with his or her own problems and shortcomings, able to personally relate to your situation to an extent. A good therapist conveys empathy and patience when listening to you and makes your first session comfortable by explaining the process of therapy and asking questions to prompt you to describe your concerns with greater ease. In addition to their psychological expertise, therapists should have the essentials skills of connection and warm regard, so that you quickly feel at ease, begin the process of relating to and connecting with your therapist, and look forward to return for your next session.

3. I am shy and not much of a talker.
Many of us are reserved when it comes to discussing private matters. Talking to someone who is warm, empathic and able to ask relevant questions, show support, and encourage you as you talk is especially important for a shy person. In addition to resolving personal problems through therapy, a shy person can improve social skills, become better at and more comfortable talking to others.

4. Therapy is expensive. I can't afford it.
People commonly overestimate the actual out-of-pocket cost of therapy to a patient, as many insurance plans cover the cost of sessions. Many insurance plans include mental health coverage, and it is likely you will be responsible only for the cost of co-pays or a portion of the fee quoted for a session. If you don’t have health insurance or your plan does not cover counseling, try to find a therapist willing to offer some discount to make it more affordable.

As you can see having a supportive counselor to help you work through areas that impact you can impact you emotionally will directly impact you moving forward for the remainder of the year as you seek to achieve your goals.
