Backyard Self-Sufficiency Workshop at Mt Pleasant (SA)
I’m off to Mt Pleasant in the Adelaide Hills on Sunday to run a morning workshop on backyard self-sufficiency. It’s my favourite topic because the earth, Mother Nature and its many wonders are one of the most important things in life. The garden, growing vegetables, trees, flowers, and enjoying nature’s creatures it attracts (including stray cats!) is what fuels me every day. I like to portray this same sense of enjoyment to others in my workshop and offer what I have discovered  along the way.
So if you want more from your own special piece of earth come along and discover a few new ideas, make some environmentally garden related products and do some ‘potting’. It would be lovely to see you!

In this workshop you’ll….

Learn about: Simple backyard and/or container vegetable growing – Ways to recycle in the garden - Basic Composting - Creating an environmentally-friendly garden - Making fullest use of what’s in your garden for cooking, cleaning, herbal products, deodorising, healing, insect repellents as a replacement for consumer products

Make and Take Home: Soap-based Garden Spray, Environmentally friendly Gardeners Hand Cleanser, Ant/Insect Repellent Powder

Plus take home a selection of new plants for your garden. (Save on buying expensive commercial plants by discovering how to pot your own!)

At this time of the year my garden is brimming with new plants and seedlings. I’ll be collecting a range of cuttings, seeds and seedlings from my garden and taking them along to the workshop for you to re-pot and plant in your garden (or pots). Here’s some of what I will be bringing: nasturtiums, insect repellent pelargoniums, rose geranium, varieties of mint, rosemary, calendulas, parsley, sweet peas, maiden hair – plus lots of other stuff from my garden.

Not able to come to the workshop?  Here's one of the recipes so that you can enjoy the experience at home:

Soap-based Garden Repellent Spray:
(Pure soap garden sprays are a natural cheap alternative to harsh chemicals in the garden. Soap spray will control aphids, caterpillars and white-fly with regular use. Use pure soap NOT detergents –
as detergents will destroy the plants).

Make up a mixture of 100g grated soap dissolved in 300ml boiling water – blend and leave to cool. Add 8 litres of hot water and dissolve. Pour into recycled spray bottles and spray onto garden plants. To make the spray a more effective insect repellent soak garlic cloves and hot fresh chilli in the mixture before using. (Tie into a small bag so that it is easier to remove). A tablespoon or two of eucalyptus oil may also be added.
