Subject: Playing Solo

Hello Friend

Do you ever play games by yourself? There is something of a solo board gaming revolution happening and there are far more options than there used to be.

Your ultimate aim may be to play games with others, but other people are not always willing or able to join. So don’t mope about sadly shuffling cards or repeatedly rolling a single die in a lonely manner… commandeer the biggest table, crack open a game and get stuck in.

Some solo modes are better than others. I tend to avoid games in which you have to work through a complex flowchart to work out what the automatic opponent does. My preference is to play a game where you have to meet certain win conditions within a defined timeframe to claim victory.

Here’s a list of games you might try - from light to complex:

  • Sprawlopolis

  • Palm Island

  • Sagrada

  • Cartographers

  • Parks

  • Wingspan

  • Uranus! (my game - you can get this from TheDarkImp.com)

  • Terraforming Mars

Did you know that solo gaming is actually a really good way to draw in other members of the family? They see something lovely on the table. They see you getting excited and being totally absorbed and they want to know what’s going on. It’s easy to pull up another chair and play a solo game cooperatively - just make decisions together. Maybe next time it will be easier to find another player!

Best wishes,

Ellie
