Subject: For parents: Here's 3 tips to raise a confident performer

Hello!

Valerie from The Happy Violinist!

I have something interesting to share about a chat with a parent. Talking about kids lessons and experiences performing on stage

She has 2 kids, with the elder child (10yo) who plays the violin, and younger child (5yo), who just started the piano.

She wanted to get her kids to learn music, and also perform. Her elder child has been learning the violin for 4 years, but didn’t perform in any recitals before. She hasn’t even seen the child perform before, even at home!

She was told by her the violin teacher “We can wait. The child will perform when he’s ready”

But the mom has waited 4 years and still waiting. 😰

And it’s even harder to get the child to perform now, as he gives lots of excuses... always saying ‘not now…next time’

So the mom asks for advice, how to start the younger child right?

So here’s our advice as someone who organises big and small recitals and concerts for thousands of kids.

1. Start early.
The sooner children are introduced to performing in a fun and low-pressure environment, the more natural it becomes for them. Even if a child has only been learning for three months and can play a 30-second piece, encourage them to perform.

2. Start small
Begin with performances for close family and friends. Even a simple piece performed at home after dinner helps the child get used to attention in a safe and familiar setting.

3. Aim for progress, not perfection
Praise your child for stepping onto the stage, even if their performance isn’t perfect. Every performance is an achievement. It helps them overcome stage fright and build confidence. The more they perform, the more they'll improve!

When a child begins to love performing, everything becomes easier.

They become more motivated, eager to learn new pieces, and their confidence grows, leading to better results in exams and competitions. (Isn't that what all of us parents love to see?🤩)

That’s why, at Happy Violinist, we provide numerous performance opportunities, helping our students become confident music learners.

Hope this sharing give you some insights on music learning!
