An effort is being made to ask the TWRC/TWRA to consider expanding the types and categories of weapons that can be used during "primitive weapon" hunting seasons in Tennessee.  TFA recognizes that some members are interested in this topic.

Proposals have been made to the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Commission, the governing body of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, for about a decade to allow historical single shot cartridge rifles such as the Sharps Rifle, Rolling Blocks, break action single shot rifles and handguns to be allowed during muzzleloader season.  Some argue that modern smokeless and other muzzleloaders have surpassed the performance of these historical rifles

One proposal would allow historical single shot rifles and handguns like those mentioned above to be used during muzzle loader season. These types of firearms are not as modern as currently allowed muzzleloaders and they are generally not even used during modern rifle season.  Also, these type of firearms would allow more hunters, including some with problems using muzzleloaders, to hunt during these other seasons.

Under the proposal, the season would essentially be changed from “Big Game Muzzleloader” to “Big Game Primitive Firearm” so muzzleloaders would be allowed AND these primitive cartridge rifles.  The firearms being added are proposed to include those that are .35 caliber or larger, fire a handgun cartridge or a straight walled rifle cartridge such as a 45-70, 444 Marlin, etc.
