Representative Monty Fritts is
expected to introduce his legislation this year that includes a proposal that would allow law-abiding Tennesseans to carry firearms
on public university property across the state. This is an issue that TFA has supported as well as other organizations. One of those other organizations is Young Americans for Liberty.
Currently Residents of Tennessee and
students at its universities are stripped of their ability to carry arms the
moment they cross onto university property under penalties of up to six years
in prison and fines up to $3,000. We are sure we don’t have to tell you, but
our universities are soft targets for criminals looking to take advantage of
the student population. Moreover, considering the recent assassination of
Charlie Kirk on a college campus in Utah, the idea of assassination based on
opinion is an unfortunate reality for students across the country.
Students and those who frequent
campuses do not deserve to have their constitutional right to carry a firearm
in defense stripped because of arbitrary campus lines and do not deserve to be
made into targets for criminals. This bill would seek to remove those
restrictions and introduce safety and a deterrence for bad actors on campus.
Young Americans for Liberty Tennessee has established a petition drive to collect signatures for over a year in
preparation for the hearing of this bill. Its goal, which TFA supports, is to demonstrate clear
public support for allowing Tennesseans to exercise their Second Amendment rights
on campus and to remove policies that leave students defenseless.
Signing the petition does not mean you
agree with every detail of the bill—it simply signals that students and
Tennesseans want to see the legislative process move forward. You can sign the petition here: https://forms.gle/A7RnEZzXQao9Afqk8
