Leadership is mostly about inspiring others to be more than they believe they can be. If leaders aren’t doing this, they really aren’t leaders. And here is the thing… it’s not that hard. There is one thing you can start doing immediately that will powerfully inspire others.
Think about the last time someone said something really nice about you. How did you feel? If you are like every human on the planet, it felt great!
When is the last time your boss, coach or someone who leads said something nice to you? How did it feel?

| | Putting the Team First
In their book, Help the Helper: Building a Culture of Extreme Teamwork, Kevin Pritchard and John Eliot quoted NFL football star Jerry Rice when asked on the ESPN show “Audibles” whether he thought the recent success of the Denver Broncos was the result of that team’s quarterback, Tim Tebow, or the defense. He said:
When are we going to get past the idea that one person or one thing is the reason for a group’s success? Get over it all ready. It’s killin’ us. I think it’s a big reason why our economy is struggling and why we don’t have nonpartisan teamwork in Washington. The Broncos aren’t winning because of Tebow or because of the D [defense]. They’re winning because all fifty-three players and the coaches and front office and maintenance guys and ticket takers are pulling together, doing their jobs well. That question’s awful.
For any one person on a team to believe that they are more important or better than the rest of the team is presumptuous and naive. I have always loved the quote by Japanese writer Ryunosuke Satoro who said, “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” We are so much more powerful together than any one of us is alone.
