Janet Tavakoli will present the keynote address, “Past, present, and future of the derivatives industry,” on the state of the art of global derivatives, how the market evolved, and where derivatives are headed. The world’s most addictive financial products can be money-losing speculations or risk mangers’ most useful and profitable hedges. She will also attend a panel to discuss current topics in global finance and the use of derivatives in Latin America.

The seminar is tailored to senior public sector participants from CABEI’s member countries; particularly from the Dominican Republic, Central America—Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica—Panama, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina.

Background

Central American Bank of Economic Integration (CABEI) (Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica aka BCIE), is an international multilateral development financial institution. Its resources are continuously invested in projects that foster development to reduce poverty and inequality; strengthen regional integration and the competitive insertion of its member countries in the global economy; providing special attention to environmental sustainability. One of CABEI´s main objective is to develop capital markets in member countries to enhance investment and economic growth.

Mission: The Bank’s objective shall be to promote the economic integration and the balanced economic and social development of the Central American region, which includes the founding countries and the non-founding regional countries.

Janet Tavakoli founded Chicago-based Tavakoli Structured Finance, Inc. in March 2003 and is a global expert in credit, credit derivatives, complex derivatives, and securitizations. She has over 30 years of experience in structured finance including in senior positions at Wall Street firms in New York, London, and Japan. She is the author of Risk (Lyons McNamara 2016), Credit Derivatives & Synthetic Structures (Wiley 1998, 2001), Structured Finance & Collateralized Debt Obligations (Wiley 2003, 2008), and Dear Mr. Buffett: What an Investor Learns 1,269 Miles from Wall Street (Wiley 2008). She holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, an MBA from the Booth School of Business, and is a former Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Chicago’s (Booth) Graduate School of Business.
