What's Happening in the Sewing Industry? If you've heard the recent headlines about Joann's Fabrics filing for bankruptcy, Michaels stepping in to buy the chain, and the Big Four commercial pattern brands (McCall's, Butterick, Vogue, and Simplicity) being sold off to a liquidation firm, you may be wondering: What does this mean for the future of sewing? All of us at Sure Fit Designs wants to offer both reassurance and clarity. Joann's Fabrics recently filed for bankruptcy and is now in the process of being acquired by Michaels. Michaels is purchasing the intellectual property and the proprietary brand names like Big Twist Yarns. It is our hope that the needs of sewists will also be supported by this acquisition. The Big Four pattern brands have been sold to Hilco, a liquidator, casting uncertainty over the availability and development of these traditional patterns.
This kind of news can feel unsettling, especially when we consider all the creators that design the patterns for these companies and access to the sewing notions and products we need to create. It is my belief that everyone in the sewing industry will find their niche and remain successful. If the market has a demand, I believe the gap will be filled.
