WHAT'S IN IT: Lessons from COVID-19, updates on Regal’s Coach-Training programmes, Yoga and You, some healing gyan, upcoming events and bloggers’ perspective on how coaching helped them. |
Dear Leaders, It has been over a year since the pandemic hit us. What a year it has been!
From loss of loved ones to loss of financial income to a total loss of social contact, the cumulative impact of the global pandemic on the brain can be very devastating. The Dean of the Boston University School of Public Health conducted one of the first mental health surveys of Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic, and found that in those early months, depression rates in the United States had more than tripled compared to the years prior, up from 8.5 per cent to 27.8 per cent.
As we strive to contain the pandemic, let’s keep in mind that the mental impact of the pandemic is yet to show up.
That notwithstanding, there have been many teachable moments over the year. More often than not great opportunities come our way disguised as impossible situations. The pandemic made us pause and look within, look for perspectives and has given us an opportunity to connect deeply with people at home /work/community, and prioritize our health and wellness.
The now-ubiquitous mask is for our own safety as much as it for others’, including our loved ones. As India enters the second wave of the pandemic, let’s ensure we keep ours as well as others’ safety as a priority always. |

REGAL AT SCRUMDAYCHENNAI |
|
Our Chief Mentor, Subash CV was invited to speak on 'Transforming Mind through Coaching' by ScrumdayChennai, on Saturday 20th March. Know more.
It was a unique experience to explore with a group of tech professionals the opportunity to transform the mind through coaching. Transformation is a taboo subject for many of us, professionals. Mind is a very different topic. But linking it to coaching offered a different experience to the participants. After all, it is a choice we make between transactional and transformational. |

MONDAY MUSE : YOGA AND COACHING BY ANUJ |
|
YOGA IN THE PRESENT TIMES By ANUJ AGRAWAL Online Yoga Therapist “I am a Yoga teacher, helping people achieve their health goals, including alleviating complex health problems. Of course, on zoom! Recently, two former colleagues from IBM reached out for some Yoga to help with anxiety and insomnia. Critical illness of spouse and marital discord were the reasons. Both are into running and very heavy exercises. I taught them some things in a couple of sessions and they were able to manage better. |
|
|
My conclusions: 1. Yoga can help when it matters 2. Online Yoga works These days, Yoga comes in many shapes, colours and sizes.
How to choose? Whatever works for you is good for you.
Unexpected things keep happening in life. Once in a while, world changing events happen, like the present pandemic. This is a time to unlearn, relearn, observe, accept and evolve.
We are fortunate that great people have made Yogic practices available to common people. And with these practices, certain concrete benefits can be attained: • Physical strength and fitness • Higher levels of energy, creativity and focus • Increased emotional strength
Sometimes, despite doing our best, we yearn for that little extra help. For me and for my students, Yoga has played that role.
I wish to conclude with a song by Swami Sivananda, who advocated integral Yoga: |

THE COACH'S CORNER |
|
AS I COACH, I TOO GET COACHED.
It took me three years to come to a decision to go for a formal coach training and certification. I have been coaching in my own way since 2014. Yet, I was not sure that I wanted to be a full-time coach or that I needed any training for that. |
|
|
I was drawn towards facilitation. I loved working with a bunch of people to arrive at a solution that worked for them. To adapt the methodologies and concepts to virtual space was a new challenge. That made me do a virtual facilitation course with Ajit Kamath, CPF.
Facilitation reminded me that it did not matter how much I knew, what mattered was how enriched the participants felt at the end of the session. I became conscious that there was no need for me to showcase myself; all I needed was to follow the process and to keep the focus on the learners.
A five-week video-making challenge with Sharat Sharma followed. I created videos, hosted Facebook live sessions and was also invited as panelist in webinars. Sharat pushed us to think beyond our limitations. He challenged us to aim higher. I learnt to give up the fear of being judged, and in turn to stop judging my clients. Read full blog here. GROUP COACHING FOR LEADERS: A NECESSITY IN TODAY’S CONTEXT
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” – African Proverb
It’s really a nice place to start – Africa. Remember what we learnt in our history and social science lessons in our sixth standard? When we connect with a tribe of people with similar values and beliefs, |
|
|
people in that tribe would want to see us succeed, and it leads to amazing things. Which means that we always require a tribe for our success.
Some people may argue that there is a lot of loss in terms of privacy for a gain called success. I remember the famous dialogue of Shahrukh in the movie DDLJ “Bade bade deshon mein aaisi choti choti baatein ... hoti rehti hai”. I think one must focus on the good and better parts and not sit and crib about the negatives. No road is smooth and straight – curves and puddles are there and we must travel our journey through this. Think for a moment that the ones before us have travelled in a much worse path than what we have. Read full blog here. Vasudevan Mukundan

COACH AND COACHEE: MY JOURNEY OF TWO PERSPECTIVES…
“When I embarked my journey as a learner coach, I also started a parallel journey: as a coachee or a client in peer coaching. To me it seems like a story of two co-travelers - while one was driving the car, the other was setting the destination. |
|
|
As the journey progressed, the driver and the passenger experienced something different… At first, the driver and passenger within me started the internal dialogue….
The driver thought, “I need to drive and I will ensure that the destination is reached in time” The passenger thought, “I will tell the driver the destination and my job will be over after that…. It is the driver’s responsibility to take me to my destination”
And here the learning started. Read full blog here. Swaraj Mishra
