Over the last few weeks, between the last issue and this issue, we celebrated several festivals - Diwali, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and more recently, New Year's Eve. 

We celebrated the birthday of Jesus, His message of love and compassion, more relevant today than ever.

“Awaken the Jesus Within” is a great goal to work on to celebrate Christmas?
While Halloween is dedicated to all the souls who have moved on to the other realm, Thanksgiving began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well, thankfully! Should not all festivals be a beautiful confluence of religion and secularism so that it is deeply spiritual?
Diwali: Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya: Diwali is one of the most popular festivals in India. It is the festival of lights. Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance."
Light is a metaphor for knowledge and consciousness.
Aren’t we all on a journey from darkness to light?

Birthday of a Poet, Adi Kavi: There was one festival, celebrated in some parts of India, not as popular as some of the other major festivals, Valmiki Jayanti. Adi Kavi Maharishi Valmiki is admired as the first Sanskrit poet, his greatest work being The Ramayana - an epic project with 7 cantos and 24,000 verses. 

Ratnakara was a highway dacoit, who would rob and kill. The day he met Sage Narada his life changed. Ratnakara realised that although his family was eager to share the fruits of his bad actions, they would not share his sins. He then shed his older self and became one of the greatest luminaries in the history of Bharath/India - Valmiki.

"Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future." It is not necessary to be a sinner to become a saint though. 

Aren’t we all on the journey from being a Ratnakara to becoming a Valmiki? What a journey, from a highway robber to one of the greatest poets, who penned the biography of one of the greatest kings, human being and avatars. The ultimate “Hero’s Journey” (Joseph Campbell)? 


When someone responds to his call to adventure, to move from the Known to the Unknown, he gets help from the supernatural power, mentor, helper. A coach is a bit like that who can play a catalytic role in the journey. Just as a master manifests when the student is ready, a coach appears when the coachee is ready. Then it is about trusting the process and moving ahead. “Follow Bliss” (Joseph Campbell) and allow the magic to manifest miraculously. 

#ManifestMagic is the current theme. Not in 2019 but in the here & now. Why wait for the next year, month or even week when we can do it right away?

Leadership Styles

We all have one default style of leadership. At times one more. #DYK there are six styles of leadership, according to Dr. Daniel Goleman (EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE - Leadership That Gets Results: HBR). One of them is coaching, perhaps least used. Coaching is the future of leadership, being empowering, transformational and based on emotional intelligence (I2We). We start a new batch of Regal Coach Certification to incorporate EQ to leadership.

Leadership is also about vulnerability and authenticity. It is about success. But it is also as much about handling failures. That said, are there any ‘failures’? Lead to Change
Coacharya- Lead to Change: High Impact Leadership and Coaching (nano conference)

(Leadership and coaching used interchangeably, a client being coachee or a team-member)

Leadership and Coaching should always be impactful: high on impact. Else it becomes merely managing, or transactional. And not transformational, as it ought to be. More often than not, leaders at all levels tend to get into their comfort zones. Perhaps, that is how the brain works and the mind is comfortable. But then it is also a choice we make.

Coaching is ‘a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires the client to maximize potential’ (ICF). Remember, we always have a choice - whether to be a spectator or to play. To play small, or big - that is high impact leadership.

As a leader/coach, the best outcome your client achieves is when she chooses to get out of her comfort zone. Often, the boundaries of the comfort zone are defined by self-limiting beliefs, which restricts her spreading out. And not surprisingly, we are not even aware of it most of the times. And hence, knowingly or knowingly, we deprive ourselves from making a big impact.

A small group exercise: If L-E-A-D-E-R was an abbreviation, then what would each letter of the word meant to you?

L - some of the responses for the first letter 'L' from the group: learner, lead, ladder.
For me, L stands for the Love Quotient. Love here is same as unconditional positive regard (Carl Rogers) or still better, unconditional love, as per Eastern/Indian thought. It's also the spiritual quotient (SQ). IQ gets you hired, EQ gets you promotions, LQ/SQ gets you fulfilment.

Leadership therefore is a gradual and conscious movement from IQ to EQ to SQ (#IQ2EQ2SQ). At a deeper level, it is the love for the divine (Purusha) and the entire creation (Prakriti), which is its manifestation.

E: enthusiastic, empower, energetic, empathy.
My choice was Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Life is a journey from I to We or IQ to EQ. And this is especially so in the case of leadership.

A: attitude, action-oriented, alignment, achiever.
My choice was action. In the book by Herminia Ibarra, 'Act like a Leader, Think like a Leader' turns the usual “think first and then act” philosophy on its head by arguing that doing these things will help you learn through action and will increase what she calls your outsight—the valuable external perspective you gain from direct experiences and experimentation.

D: dare, doer, determination.
I think its discipline because it's one of the 5 D's of life (Duty, Discipline, Devotion, Determination and Discretion).

‘What about risk?’ question from the group.
Taking risk is important. But if I had to choose between being daring and or being disciplined, I would choose the latter because taking risks and being daring comes from discipline. Even creativity can be tapped into through discipline, as an author or an artist.

E: engaged, empowerment.
I think it is to explore. It is the deeper exploration of the underlined biases. To me it is a heart-to-heart communication between two adults at a deep level, based on trust and intimacy.

R - Some of the responses: react, realise, role model.
For me it was about Result. We should set smart goals. If we move from point A to point B, then it is just a stepping stone to something bigger - to manifest magic.

It is Regal Unlimited. Just as sweetness is the natural state of sugar, we are all regal too. We don’t need to have any problems at the physical, mental and emotional levels. We are all in essence royalty. Unlimited stands for the unlimited potential within us. That unlimited potential can manifest only if we tap into the leader within us. And only when we tap into the leader within, can we lead others. This in essence is ‘High-Impact Leadership’.

How do we tap that Unlimited Potential? One of the ways is by setting high goals. Shared Ford’s quote, how we forget

Identifying and aligning with life purpose, reading, reflecting, journaling and meditating can help. Having a coach also helps. A coach is someone you can talk to openly without being judged and they are always supportive.

How to find a good coach? Each city has an ‘ICF chapter’ that’s the best way to reach out to the coaches.

How does one go about defining the purpose? I feel deep within ourselves we all know what is our purpose. We just have to quieten our cluttered mind and think deep about it. There is also a tool known as the ‘Wheel of Life’, as we call it as ’Regal@60’. It is a methodological process of eliminating what you don’t want to do to arrive at what you want to do. And eventually, to just be.
