Hello Friend,
Here in Australia, we have just started our new school year. I love the start of a year as I use it as a good excuse to revise over key concepts and do a technique blitz!
Bow holds get checked every lesson but it's still nice to have a dive into why we balance our fingers as we do.
But how do we do this in an early childhood setting?
I believe in building on what my students already know...
Ask your students to show you how they would hold and use the following items:
Crayon Pick a strawberry Chop sticks A pet bird/mouse/hamster
Do they need to hold these items with a strong squeezing grip?
What would happen if they held these items really tight?
Build on their prior understanding. This is exactly how we scaffold as teachers.
You may want to check out the book which inspired me many years ago...
Playing the String Game by Phylis Young.
Let me know your thoughts on this.
Warmest regards,
Laura xx
