“An angel has wins and lives up in the sky. They talk to children in their hearts.”
--Anonymous. Age 6

As we all know, last week on December 14th twenty six precious children and six courageous adults were senselessly taken from us all. It is in their honor I share this story.
The Bubble Lady
Magic happens everywhere. Sometimes it is right in front of our eyes. However, we often move away from what could be a magical experience because of outer coverings. Meeting the “Bubble Lady,” as I like to call her, provided just such a magical experience for me.

While sitting on the grass enjoying the warm February Arizona breezes in the open air park in the Scottsdale Art Center, my attention was drawn to the large water fountain across the park. I noticed a young lady blowing bubbles, the kind of bubbles whereby you dip a wand into a colored plastic bottle and blow the bubbles through the hole in the wand. I watched as the expressions of delight and wonder emerged on the faces of the many children and adults who passed by. Each seemed to be captured by the many bubbles that danced around them. My natural curiosity got the best of me and I walked across the park to where she was standing. Now, I must add, that no one approached the woman, fore she was dressed in what teenagers call “Goth.” She wore a silver necklace and bracelet with spikes protruding out of them, a black leather vest, black pants, and a black T shirt.

“Hello,” I said, while extending my hand for a courteous handshake. “My name is Joyce.” The young woman looked surprised that someone was talking to her, but extended her hand back and replied, “Hello, my name is Spooky.”

Yep, you heard me right; she said her name was “Spooky.” I chuckled and said that I thought that was a great name indeed. All the while, Spooky continued to blow bubbles and people young and old alike, continued to be drawn into the scene.

I then said, “Are you noticing how much delight you are bringing to so many who pass by?” Again, a bit surprised, Spooky said she hadn’t really noticed. She said she just liked to blow bubbles.

I asked how she got started blowing bubbles. Spooky then said the magic words to me.

“Would you like to hear a story about how it all started?” Being a storyteller, those words were music to my heart. Without hesitation I responded with an unequivocal “Yes, I would be delighted to hear the story.” And so Spooky began…

“When I was a little girl, there was an old woman in our neighborhood who used to blow bubbles all of the time. She blew bubbles in the morning, she blew bubbles in the afternoon, and she blew bubbles in the evening. I asked her why she blew bubbles, and she said. “Look into each bubble and you will see a rainbow.” (All the while Spooky talked, she continued to blow bubbles.) Each rainbow is the soul of a child here on earth and those who have gone on from this world to heaven. I blow the bubbles to honor the souls of all of the children and help them with their journey.”

When Spooky finished the story, I had tears in my eyes. I realized that within this special young woman was a gift of care and healing. I asked if I could share the story with others. I told her what I did and how I saw stories to be offered as “spiritual vitamins” to help others heal. I promised that I would mention her name and how I got the story when I spoke. I do not know how Spooky got her name, nor have I seen her since, but I do know that her unique presence and story has forever touched my life.

As I promised Spooky, I recently told the story to end my Keynote presentation to a large group of play therapists at a conference. I gave out small bottles of bubbles and told the group to open the bottles and blow the bubbles and to think of the souls of all of the children who passed on as well as the souls of the little children who are struggling here on earth. With the music of the Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwi’ole in the background singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” over one hundred and fifty people filled the room with bubbles.

During this busy holiday season, let us take a few moments to blow bubbles and see the rainbows in honor and remembrance of the innocent and beautiful souls who have made their way to Heaven.
