Subject: LETTUCE be healthy ☺

Hi Friend.

This week is all about lettuce :)  Lettuce is really easy to grow outdoors and can be grown in nearly any container in only 6 weeks.  Below is an image to show how quickly and easily lettuce grows over just the course of a few weeks.
Cut and Come Again Method:

The great part of growing lettuce is that it will continue to grow once you pick it. Once the leaves are about 4 to 6 inches tall, it's time to harvest.  Pinch or cut the leaves off above the crown starting with the outer leaves.  This will allow the plant to keep growing and produce even more lettuce for your center.  The crown should continue producing lettuce until it bolts (and turns into seed).
Lessons in the Garden
There are many different variations of lettuce leaves.  Spinach, leaf lettuce, romaine, kale and arugula are common examples that can be grown in WV.  This lesson called, Lettuce Leaf Rubbings, encourages children to use all of their senses to explore different types of leaf lettuce.  Children will also be able to create their own leaf rubbings using the different leaves. http://bit.ly/2sbFVZG

And finally, another great way to expose preschoolers to the growing process is to re-grow romaine lettuce from the stump.  Here is a great tutorial on how to get it started.
We hope that things are growing well in your garden.  If you have any questions about your garden, send us a picture or email us.  We would love to help you in any way.

We'll be back in touch with more information next week as we begin to talk about bugs and pollination.

Have a great week ahead.
